Cleaner in Saudi Arabia showered with gifts after social media mockery

Cleaner in Saudi Arabia showered with gifts after being mocked on social media - CNN.com

A cleaner in the capital of Saudi Arabia was given a set of gold jewels and promised thousands of riyals after he was ridiculed on social media when a photo of him staring at a jewelry shop display went viral.
An Instagram user had mocked the cleaner, who is from Bangladesh but works in Riyadh, by posting the photo with a caption that read “he looks as though he is seeing trash”.
The comment promped an outpouring support of the cleaner on social media, and Abdullah al Qahtani, the owner of the Twitter account Ensaniyat (humanitarianism), started a campaign to find the man in the photo.
“I received tons of phone calls and messages in response to my tweet. Some were really helpful, while others were claiming that they were the cleaner,” al Qahtani said.
“But three hours [after] my tweet, which was shared over 6,000 times, we found him,” the 38-year-old businessman told CNN over the phone.
Twitter users were able to identify the location of the cleaner, Nazer al-Islam Abdul Karim, from the reflection of the shop glass visible in the photo.
When al Qahtani posted a new photo of Abdul Karim, people began asking for a way to get in touch him.
“Some wanted to donate gold sets, others cash, iPhones and Samsung Galaxy phones,” al Qahtani said. “Even a rice company wanted to donate rice bags to Nazer al-Islam.”
Turki al-Dajam, an executive at a Saudi sports channel, posted videos on Snapchat showing Abdul Karim choosing a gold set. He also posted photos of the cleaner with his new gifts.
Abdul Karim, who is 65, told CNN that he was delighted with the gifts. Describing the moment the photo was taken, he said: “I saw a flash. I didn’t know what this was. Then I heard that my photo was in the media.”
“I was just doing my job as a cleaner in the municipality and found myself in front of the gold shop. I am very happy about the gifts and very thankful.”
Al Qahtani — who set up the Ensanyat Twitter account to connect social media users with people in need across Riyadh — said it was very endearing to see the amount of solitary from people in Saudi Arabia, but also across the Gulf region.

depends what you count as backwards, in your part of the world they abort millions of babies a year just because they are female, in your part of the world the poor are ridiculed in a manner which only exists there, you would rather be poor in Saudi Arabia than India that's for sure.

Also you would rather be a poor boy in India then a poor boy in Pashtun lands, where you will be sodomized by old men for sure, that is a given
There is enough wealth in India for it to not be as poverty stricken as it is.

In india the poor are called untouchables and worth less than even animals. If rape, child prostitution and persecution is not classed as "that horrible" then nothing is.

Plenty of cases of criminal activity, for every case of Saudi you bring up i can pull up 10 in India.

As for your last paragraph, i disagree since kidnapping of children in India or even where your kind have settled in Pakistan the numbers beat anyone else.

being poor in India is very dangerous, more so than anywhere in the world.

Yet, after all that, India still has lower rape rates then your Panjuistan, why is that? Punjab province has the highest rape rates in all of Pakistan

Have to disagree, and a lot of Indians agree with me on this. The treatment of the poor in India is faaaar worse than that of Pakistan. Can't speak for Saudi Arabia, but in Pakistan you won't find hordes of people in tents wearing what can barely even be called an underwear. People don't roam around naked because they simply don't have any clothes. Pakistan is of course poor, no denying that, but in India however, poverty is an epidemic.

As far as the link goes, I wonder how much money from the pockets of these privileged Arabs can pay away the discrimination that Pakistanis and Bengalis face there on a day to day basis.

Been to Tharparkar, and two villages along the way, Mitthi and Badin. I have to say they were poor areas but not nearly on the same scale as India.

Even Punjab is not a paradise dude. It's hardly France. People in Jhang, Multan and Jhelum are also poor. It's not like Punjabis are these wealthy people with ****loads of cash, we're just as deprived because of a corrupt ruling class.

India has more population, thats why there is more poverty there, but Pakistan is not better at all, Sindh, South Punjab, KPK, Balochistan there is extreme poverty

Both of these links have nothing to do with the numbers when Pakistan is compared to India. One of your links has no source, and the other is an opinion piece with no facts or data to back up the claims.
