  • Even I'm not pure, as I mentioned, but I struggle to see myself as something else.
You should embrace both sides of your lineage.

You did live in the punjab, so it makes sense that you'd see yourself as a Punjabi. But from a racial standpoint, there's more merit with identifying as a combination of both.

Sure. I'm of the opinion that if they've intermixed with the locals for 100 years, and as a result identify with punjabis, then yes they're Punjabis. On the other hand, if they've lived in punjab, but only intermixed with their own ethnicity, and especially if they even self identify as being said ethnicity, it should be hard to say they are punjabi... even if they do behave like punjabis, speak the language, etc.

The Pathans and Balochs that are in Punjab proper, apart from the tribes at frontier like Niazies, Jadoons or Seraiki Balochs like Mazaries, Legharies, are not married by Punjabi tribes and they aren't politically influential and are mostly landless. They still identify as Pathan and Baloch.

Only rajputs and some other landholding tribes stick with caste system. Other punjabis (low castes) are open to marring outside.

Between Punjabi and Kashmiri, I'd say our family's culturally more Punjabi than anything. We speak Urdu at home because my mum can't speak Punjabi well, but she knows nothing about Kashmir. So Kashmiriyat is a done deal for us, we're basically just white Punjabis lol

I'd say I know a bit about Kashmir, but I've never interacted with Indian Kashmiris before, if I did I'd be intrigued to learn Koshur, just as I'm open to learning Pashto, or Dari or any other language.

You're right, but it depends on who you ask. Lots of Pashtuns, especially the communist/ANP or from the nationalist tradition say Imran is a Jaali Pathan, not because he sucks up to Punjab, but he just doesn't speak Pashto. Yet he pretends to be very Pashtun. That looks like an identity crisis to me, if nothing else.

Agricultural or landowning tribes do not marry with them as they don't have any land or are urban sellers of qahwa/shawls or shepherds. They have to then mostly marry their own.

You should use a better calculator with more Central Asian reference populations like MDLP K23b Or MDLP K13. Neither Pashtuns or Tajiks are genetically homogeneous so using one sample is misleading as well. Many Pashtuns (both Afghan and Pakistani) are closer to Afghan Tajiks, southern/central Tajiks from Tajikistan (Kulobi and Gharmi Tajiks), Pamiris, Yaghnobis, Afghan Uzbeks, Turkmen, etc. than to South Asians.

But yes, NW South Asians do have an affinity to South Central Asians. On many calculators they get modeled as 1/2 Pashtun or Tajik + 1/2 some kind of low-caste Indic population.

You actually reminded me of something... most of the fair skinned punjabis I know personally are usually mixed with kashmiris, sometimes with Pakhtuns. Seems like this kashmiri punjabi hybrid is more common than I realized.

Yeah, this didn't have those reference populations but this was just to depict affinity. Some Afghan Pashtuns can be very 'West' shifted while others like some Tajiks have elevated East Asian giving them a Central Asian pull. But on most oracles many Punjabis get 'Pathan' which is Pak Pashtun as closest population. On Eurasia k6 ASI many are getting Afghan Pashtun as well.

                        Interesting.
Punjabi-Kashmiri or Punjabi-Pashtun mixes are uncommon to begin with.

I personally know 3, 4 if you include Porus, punjabi kashmiri hybrids.

But still, if you look overall, most Punjabis, Pashtuns and Kashmiris are endogamous though ofcourse in urban areas and in the diaspora these are more common.

Biharis and upites look like Altaf hussain, compare the punjabies on either side to get an accurate picture.
