  • I need help

I was told since birth that I will marry my khala's(mother's sister) daughter. I always refused, because I didn't like her. So, after years of emotional blackmail, I told my mother, fine. I figured I was being a good son. After I accepted, my mother's sister acted up. She figured that her daughter is now a PHD, and that I am beneath them, even though they would beg for me. When I had heard the news of refusal, I was the happiest man on Earth, but my mother became depressed. She was depressed for two months.

She finally said to me, that she will marry me off to the most beautiful woman that is also educated. She said that she will invite her sister front row to my marriage. I was always very close to my aunt, and she really loved me the most. So I had a conversation with her years later(tonight) and told her that I am not upset with her and that I wish her family the best. She told me that she made a mistake and that her daughter is graduating and she wants to marry her off to me.

I was just like fuuuuuuck! I thought I had dodged the bullet. My aunt apologized and immediately asked to speak with my mother. They are speaking on skype as I am typing. **** man.

I am not attracted to my cousin and she has a very weird personality. I am so turned off.

I was just wondering, If anyone else here had to marry their cousin due to family obligations. How was your marriage? Do you eventually become attracted to your cousin even If you don't like her?

I need some kind of advice.

Talk to your mother and tell her that you don't want to marry your cousin. Parents approval is a bliss, but your happiness is important too. Keep in mind that it will be you who have to spend the rest of your life with her, not your mom. If I was you I would refuse.

I am lucky person because my parents would never impose on me a woman, specially a cousin or something like that (both my mom and my dad know that I am against family intermarriage). My fiancé is a Pashtun girl from Kunar. My parents are more than happy though they would like a Herati aroos for their son. But they accept my choice.

    Just my two cents, buddy.

You can always play the 'I'm-so-insulted'-card; you're insulted by the initial refusal so don't want to do it anymore. Or... you could man up and tell your parents how you actually feel.

Speak to your mother and explain to her about your trouble and why you don't want to marry your cousin. I'm sure she'll understand, she's your mother after all.

I'm not touching this ....this is some South Asian soap opera nonsense. That's all you buddy.

Also, as economist Kaushik Basu says: "For a nation to progress it is important for people to spend time on science, mathematics and literature instead of spending time showing that 5,000 years ago their ancestors did science, mathematics and literature."
