  • Key Cultural Projects in Bamyan Province

Despite the destruction of the Giant Buddha of Bamyan by the Taliban 14 years ago, Bamyan remains a culturally and economically important province of Afghanistan. In 2015 Bamyan province was officially introduced as the cultural capital of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). This is an important recognition since SAARC provides a platform for the people of South Asia to work together to improve the quality of life through economic growth, social progress and cultural development in the region. Furthermore, the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) recently announced that it will launch six key cultural projects in central Bamiyan. The projects will include the construction of a cultural center, reconstruction of the historic Ghoghola city, and research on local traditions and historic monuments, all in an effort to preserve Afghanistan’s cultural heritage.
Some view violent acts such as the destruction of the Giant Buddha by the Taliban as crimes against cultural assets and a country’s heritage – do you agree?
