The only restaurant near me is called Khyber Pass in Tooting and it's not worth the travel or the money. Their food was average at best. The guys who run it are Afghans from Peshawar and they claim to make "Charsi Tikka", of course it wasn't anywhere near the real thing. Their Chapli Kabab doesn't even come with egg and tomato which is standard where I grew up.
I know our traditional foods are hard to recreate abroad since we use different cuts of meat and mutton tail fat which is not easy to come by in the West. Another thing is that when you eat Palaw in watan it usually comes with a side of Kofta Nakhod but whenever I eat it abroad (even in Dubai) it doesn't come with the Kofta and I don't like to eat Palaw without a side. Most Afghan restaurants have Mantu on the menu but they don't have Ashak (the vegetarian version) which I prefer.
My friend and cousins said that the real taste of our food can never be recreated in the West but we should be happy that these restaurants exist because it's the closest we can get over here but I'd rather not eat that.
Anyone know any "authentic" Afghan places in London?
