The Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) natural-gas pipeline is a project that could provide energy, employment, and revenue for Afghanistan for many decades to come. The project was inaugurated on December 13th, 2015 at a ceremony attended by President Ghani along with Turkmenistan President Gurbanguly Berdymuhmedov, Pakistan’s Nawaz Sharif and Indian Vice President Ansari. The TAPI project, when completed, will carry thirty-three billion cubic meters of natural gas per year from Turkmenistan through Afghanistan and Pakistan to India. It is tentatively scheduled to be completed in 2019. The TAPI pipeline project could earn Afghanistan 400 million dollars a year in transit fees as well as meet the energy needs of Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India.
The TAPI project is a great example of regional economic cooperation, and as such, do you believe it will pave the way forward for peace and stability in the region?
