Genes Of Most Ashkenazi Jews Trace Back To Indigenous Europe, Not Middle East

A genetic study of Ashkenazi Jews shows a “whiter” heritage drawn more from prehistoric Europe than from the Levant, home to the modern state of Israel.

A team of international researchers from Malaysia to Salt Lake City found in a study published Tuesday that most variance in mitochondrial DNA — passed from mother to daughter, like Judaism — derives from the indigenous peoples of Western and Central Europe, as opposed to the Levant, as previously thought. Four of the major “founders” of Ashkenazi Jewry derive most variance from European sources, accounting for some 40 percent of the genome. The remaining 60 percent from minor founders, too, comes mostly from Europe.

“These results point to a significant role for the conversion of women in the formation of Ashkenazi communities, and provide the foundation for a detailed reconstruction of Ashkenazi genealogical history,” lead investigator, Martin Richards, and his colleagues wrote. “The origins of Ashkenazi Jews—the great majority of living Jews—remain highly contested and enigmatic to this day.”

Like Sephardic Jews, whose history traces to Iberia, followed by expulsion after 1492, Ashkenazi peoples trace their history to the Levant some 2,000-3,000 years ago. However, researchers suspect Ashkenazi Jews emerged from movements of Mediterranean Jews northward into the Rhineland after the 12th century, later expanding eastward to Poland, Lithuania, and Russia following expulsion from Western Europe in the 14th and 15th centuries.

These massive expansions, some argue, point to widespread conversion to Judaism among women, and men, in these areas, particularly in the North Caucasus region following the adoption by the Khazar kingdom of Judaism.

For years, researchers have pondered the possible genetic admixtures from Europe, the Levant, and the Caucuses, engaging in highly controversial debate. “The extent to which Ashkenazi Jewry trace their ancestry to the Levant or to Europe is a longstanding question,” Richards wrote. “Our results, primarily from the detailed analysis of the four major [genetic] founders, but corroborated with the remaining Ashkenazi [genetics], suggests that most Ashkenazi maternal lineages trace their ancestry to prehistoric Europe.”

Thus, the majority of Ashkenazi genetic heritage derives not from diasporic movement northward from the biblical homeland or from Near Eastern friends, but from within the indigenous peoples of Western and Central Europe.

To reach this conclusion, the researchers sequenced 74 mitochondrial genomes and analyzed more than 3,500 such genomes spanning Europe, the Caucasus, and the Near East, sweeping the entirety of Ashkenazi genealogical history. With some 80 percent of the ancestry deriving from European peoples, Ashkenazi Jews likely began intermarrying with indigenous European women 2,000 years or so ago.

A guy who looks like this seems like a European tyrant rather than a middle eastern leader/tyrant.
There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.

The cultural and religious connection is far more important for people than their genetic connection to a certain area/people.

What is non-cultural atheist? Are you implying that atheists cannot have 'culture'? Israel was founded by secular Jews, of whom a considerable percentage was atheist or at the very least agnostic. Yet they considered themselves as Jews in every sense of the word and felt as a part of the Jewish people. They shared a collective experience with other (mainly European) Jews, they had similar traditions, similar cuisine, oftentimes spoke the same language, had similar music, their own theatre, married within their own community, etc.etc. You can value all those aspects of Jewish life without practicing Judaism. There are many atheists and agnostics who celebrate Christmas, Eid, etc. There is much more to culture than only religion.

This statement contradicts itself in so many ways I'm not even going to bother.

Tel Aviv trumps New York to be named world's best gay city

                        By Graham Smith for MailOnline 13:48 18 Jan 2012, updated 13:25 24 Jan 2012

Israeli metropolis beats New York and Toronto in poll naming best urban destinations for gay travellers.
Tel Aviv has been named the world's number one gay city.

The Israeli metropolis beat out competition from New York to top a survey carried out by American Airlines and GayCities.com to find the most popular destination for gay travellers.

It landed a staggering 43 per cent of the vote, way ahead of runner-up New York's 14 per cent and third-placed Toronto with 7 per cent.

                        WORLD'S TOP GAY CITIES

The most popular destinations for gay travellers, as voted for by readers of GayCities.com, are:

                        1. Tel Aviv - 43 per cent

                        2. New York - 14 per cent

                        3. Toronto - 7 per cent

                        4. Sao Paolo - 6 per cent

                        5= London - 5 per cent Madrid - 5 per cent

                        7. New Orleans - 4 per cent

                        8. Mexico City - 4 per cent

Sao Paolo came in at four with 6 per cent, while rounding out the top five with 5 per cent each were London and Madrid.

GayCities described Tel Aviv as 'the gay capital of the Middle East is exotic with a Mediterranean c'est la vie attitude'.

Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai hailed his 'free city' and said he is proud of the survey results.

He wrote on his Facebook page: 'Victory in this competition further highlights the fact that Tel Aviv is a city that respects all people equally, and allows all people to live according to their values and desires.

'This is a free city in which everyone can feel proud, and be proud of who they are.'

Users of the GayCities website were asked to submit their votes in a number of categories, including Best City Of 2011. The site did not reveal how many people voted.

New York did, however, win the title of Best Nightlife City with 32 per cent of the vote, followed by London with 14 per cent and Madrid with 12 per cent.

Gay and lesbian life in Tel Aviv is perhaps the most vibrant in the Middle-East, mainly attributable to the fact the gay community in Israel enjoys political freedom like in no other country in the region.

Every June since 1998, the city has hosted a series of gay-themed events ending with the annual Gay Pride parade.

For year-round areas of interest, website GayTLVGuide.com recommends Rothschild Boulevard, which it describes as a 'buzzing centre of entertainment' with several gay bars and clubs.

The city's most famous gay-orientated area is Shenkin Street, a road that 'seems to stretch out forever'.

why was this part not posted?

San Francisco, long regarded as the gay capital of the U.S., may have missed out on a mention in the Best City poll, but was named the Best Pride City with 29 per cent of the vote.

Sao Paolo and Toronto came second and third with 17 per cent and 12 per cent respectively naming the cities as having the best annual gay parades.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Paris was named Best Food City ahead of New Orleans and San Francisco.

GayCities users named New York the Best Dressed City, with London in second place and Rome trailing in third.

its a survey! gays from all over the world travel to tel aviv because israel is liberal (and there is apartheid? hahahahahaha). israel is the only country in middle east with political freedom for gay community. i bet even gay from islamic countries are coming to tel aviv. tel aviv is the most popular destination of gays from around the world but not the capital of the gays!

give me an official statistic that tel aviv has the most gay as residents in compare to the entire residents

Tel Aviv is a modern sodom and gomorrah, and the people of the book are proud. All while claiming ownership of the land based on religious grounds even while most of them are secular. This deserves another
