  • pandora's box

in myth pandora was given a box by the gods and told not open it. in life we're also given thought but told not to think too much.

my question is why we afghans of all creeds prefer to act before we think.

i was sitting in the back of a very crowded van on our way back from the mosque today and there was this really old folk song with lyrics that went on about how people bow in shame whenever the thought of conquering afghans crosses their minds.
needless to say, i was bowing in shame over the idea of how much of egomaniacs we really are. somewhere down the line, we passed on stories of how our great grand fathers did this and that and forgot to teach them of the small things like being decent to each other.
we talk big about how we are freedom lovers and how we would rather set ourselves on fire rather than being enslaved but then we don't know **** about the basics of what freedom or dignity.
afghans aspire to be like their heroes when they have forgotten how it is that one lives the life of an ordinary but dignified human being.

"To burn always with this hard gemlike flame, to maintain this ecstasy, is success in life."

My answer to your question, we're a culture o empty bravado, mythology and pompousness. We think we're destined to succeed because we're fed nonsense such as "we're 5000 years old" a statement not confirmed by history, and that we've been undefeated by every invader, a statement actually refuted by history. We think we already know whatever it is we need to know, thus there's nothing to think about , "we've figured it out". We haven't suffered enough by the folly of our ways to realize we have much to learn and a lot less impulse to act upon.

at one level we've a lot of pride and on the other side we have the same amount of guilt about our incompetence.

we're a people ruled by emotions because we never had a chance to develop our intellect. we're not stupid but at the same time we're not intelligent for todays world.

maybe we should open the pandora's box and think for once about our situation. maybe at least we'll find a place where we're neither proud nor ashamed of who we're.

the only way we can do that is education, not education in there but western education, that means afghans from the west going there and starting a new chapter, but that is impossible because there is no incentive for educated afghans in the west to go back home.

well the two divergent poles are actually one in the same. We say all this fluff to ourselves to hides from our current state. We blame everyone but ourselves for our failures. It's either the Arabs fault, or Pakis fault or British fault .....well certainly they had a hand in taking advantage but it is OUR fault..

            Very good thread.
I think we do not communicate with our children, we don't teach them directly. They learn by their culture and environment automatically just like that.
Communication is very important otherwise we will be a lost nation, lost language, lost culture and lost Pukhtunwali.

Believe me Pashtuns are the greatest people on this planet when it comes to humanity, sincerity, hard work, honesty but what we need to do is to polish.
I am not saying this because I am a Pashtun but because I have an experience living with different people. In Europe you will find Pashtuns just as labour force available everywhere, other nations like Punjabis are Business owners.
Why we can't become owners because we have a few problems, We can't communicate as others can do, we don't have tolerance, We don't know Business tactics how to play the game.
The biggest problem we have is the communication problem and inconsistency.

That is what we are taught in our culture. Assertive and sometimes even agressive people are actully praised, they can be dum as a donkey, but when they talk fast, act fast they are seen as an ideal, meanwhile the reserved, quite and thinkers are seen as weak, or just simple incompetent.

The big problem is, that in our culture we still have to manage our retards and agressive people, most other cultures have subdued them, in Pashtun culture we still have not...

Like from the fact that people still praise murderers and war criminals and even suicide bombers. Is a big problem that we need to adress.

I live in Europe and I see a lot of Pashtun who came here as a chiled all having degree in something and having good jobs, only some who came here as adults have low paid jobs, but still their children or they themself work hard to surpass it.

I see more labour forcess among arabs and morocans than Afghans, despite them living here for generations....

I live in Belgium, but I see most Afghans having a good job here, only some do labour, but becuase they came here quite old and could not really start a proper education.
