  • Pashtuns of Western Afghanistan---Farah, Nimroz, Herat

Do they speak Pashto ? I have the kind of feeling many speak Dari -may be they are bilingual?

The famous rebellious Afghan member parliament also spoke Dari though said she is a Pashtun.

It is a mixed Baluch-Pashtun province with the northern part more Pashtun the southern more Baluch.

I saw a documentary about Nimruz in which most people spoke Dari and very few spoke Pashto in that video but of course one video doesn't represent the whole province. I believe they speak Rakshani Balochi as native language and Dari for education/business but I could be wrong.

By the way Baluch and Pashtuns in Afghanistan usually have close political alliance. This is what sounds to me.

I don't think Baloch are very active in Afghan politics because they don't number that much in Afghanistan but its best interest for them to side with Pashtuns than with Tajiks or others but I think in Afghanistan Baloch people are closer to Iranian-influenced Tajiks like those of Herat. due to their location but some Baloch and Brahui live among Pashtuns in areas like Zabul and also sometimes Baloch nomads travel with the Kuchyaan.

Yes, I don't know if Malalai Joya can speak Pashto or not, but she is one of the greatest Pashtun activists ever, and one of my heroes. She's from Farah, where a lot of the communities are more comfortable speaking Dari.

What I have found, and this is not an academic assessment by any degree is that Western Afghanistan Pashtuns by in large can speak Pashto, but there are a large number of them particularly Nurzai who cannot speak Pashto or very few of them can speak Pashto. Most of the Western Afghanistan tribes are from the Panjpayi.

From my experiences only the Nurzai of Kandahar were Pashto wayunki. Any Nurzai I have met from Herat, Farah or Nimroz were Dari speaking. My Treh says that the Nurzai Kuchi of Herat speak Pashto (of the Kandahari variety).

Those areas are predominately Pashtun inhabited. I expect them to speak Pashto,

You could literally say that about 99.9% of Afghan Pashtuns. However sadly our Farsizaban brothers usually don't do the same.

They speak Pashto. In Farah everyone speaks Pashto even Farsiwans. In Herat there are areas like Shindand where everyone speaks pashto. I can show you videos of both. Nimruz Pashtuns are the same as Helmandian everyone speaks pashto. The only ones that dont speak pashto are long settled Pashtuns of herat CITY. They all speak a dialect similair to the Kandahari one. There are native Pashto speakers even in Iran. I am an expert on this my extended Family is mainly Farahi and Herati Pashtun. While i am Kandahari.

You're kandahari too? Are you entirely kandahari or a mixture of kandahar pahstun+ X pahstun?
