Each year on September 21, International Day of Peace, also known as World Peace Day, is celebrated around the world including Afghanistan. The United Nations has declared it as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, within and among nations and peoples. The observance and recognition of World Peace Day this year will be significant for Afghanistan as it stands at a crucial juncture with the ongoing transition, a historic election, and Afghan citizen longing for peace and stability. Peace in Afghanistan, as expressed by Afghans, means different things to different people. To some, it means freedom, participation of women in all aspects of social and political life, and decision-making power for all. To others it simply means security throughout the country and education opportunities for all. What does peace mean to you?
