  • Afghan Air Force

Afghanistan’s air force is viewed by many as a crucial part of modernizing the Afghan military. As such, the development of the air force is being watched closely, especially as withdrawal of US and NATO forces nears. The fear is that in the absence of NATO air power Afghan security forces may struggle to keep the enemy at bay without a fully functioning air force of its own. The good news is that significant development has taken place with NATO training and mentoring the Afghan air force in order to be self-sufficient and fully operational by end of 2016; the goal is to have 8000 personnel, 200 aircrafts, and an additional 150 pilots. The pilots are to receive training abroad and inside Afghanistan. Furthermore, the first two C-130 pilots have already flown solo and helicopters are running missions with all-Afghan crews.
How do you evaluate the capabilities of the Afghan air force and what challenges do you foresee post 2014?
