  • International Anti-drug day

Jun 22nd marks International Anti-drug day, observed and celebrated in Afghanistan, a nation in which young and old have fallen victim to this threat. According to reports, while considerable progress in drug eradication in various parts of the country has been achieved, challenges still remain at a national level and a comprehensive approach based on shared responsibility by the Afghan government and International organizations is required to combat this problem. According to the Minister of Counter Narcotics of Afghanistan, in March of this year the Afghan government was able to seize about 14% of the total drugs produced and arrest 3000 drug traffickers. Furthermore, Afghanistan was able to create a network of 100 facilities across the country offering treatment. This being said, many believe that greater international support is needed given the increasing number of addicts, especially among vulnerable groups.
Do you think a community-centered approach to the prevention of drug use and drug trafficking is more effective or an international approach?
