  • Afghanistan landslide

    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-27268860

The scene here is pretty desolate and distraught. The families who survived, a few hundred people, are at the top of the valley. The women and children sit on the open hillside where they spent the night. The men are lining up for aid and trying to secure their shelter. There are perhaps 100 or so tents that have now been put up. They arrived on Saturday, along with some food and blankets. At the bottom of the valley, there is little evidence left of where the village was because the mud is so deep. Officials here say it is very unlikely any of the bodies will be found. People have now given up the search because they realise it is hopeless. It may be that we never have a final figure for the number of dead.

There are still conflicting reports on the number dead, some are saying 350 and others up to 3000.
There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.

There were two landslides, the first one buried the village and the second one happened sometime later just as rescue attempts were made.

Those caught in the mudslide must have died instantly when the mountain collapsed on their houses. Its just too horrific to think that they experienced being buried alive. I hope they died instantly and did not suffer.

Any effort to recover the bodies proved impossible. One hopes they did not suffer.

Bilal Sarwary BBC News, Kabul "There has been an unprecedented response from young Afghans across the country on Facebook to the landslide in Badakhshan. In Pashto, Dari and English, they are writing: "Badakhshan we are with you, we are mourning your sorrow".
Others have changed their profile pictures to the remote village of Ab Barik - now the main topic being discussed among a majority of Afghans.
Funds have been set up for victims by many Afghans in and outside the country.
Others on Facebook have castigated what they call a slow government response and for failing to warn people in the province.
Senior Afghan officials have also been castigated after group photos of them visiting the affected areas appeared on Facebook, showing some laughing."

That sounds awfully ignorant. Posting comments on facebook is not a response to a human tragedy, its a reaction.

There was heavy rainfall in most of northern Afghanistan and some areas were flooded. This landslide is also due to too much water on the ground.

The second landslide that killed almost 600 men who went to rescue the victims of the first landslide left many families without any male member to work on the fields.

I really did not understand this Bilal Sarwari, what is he trying to say about Afghans responding/reacting on facebook, is that news? Afghans reacting to a tragedy is a sign that they have finally become normal human beings, I don't know what is the point of the whole facebook reaction thing. Isn't the death of 600 who immediately went to rescue others a sign that Afghan risk lives to rescue others?

This moron Bilal Sarwari is a complete tool.

It makes me curios how popular facebook is in Afghanistan. A nation with barely 20% literate population and non-existent electricity in most of the areas outside of the major cities.

I agree, back to the topic.

As far as your question in regards to facebook's popularity among afghans, I really don't know but I assume Bilal Sarwari was talking about social media in general and used facebook as a generic term for social media.
