  • International Women's Day

With International Women’s Day approaching, we would like to congratulate, honor, and highlight the significant achievements obtained by women in Afghanistan since the downfall of the Taliban. Afghan women have played a key role in promoting democracy and taking active roles in politics, civil society, free press, and the reconstruction process in the country practicing their social and political rights in spite of facing challenges. Today, millions of girls attend school, thousands study in higher education institutions, and hundreds are parliamentarians and some are members of cabinet. These are great achievement and, of course, challenges remain and complete change cannot be achieved in months or years. It is a process, but what is remarkable is that Afghanistan has begun that process.

With a new government on the horizon, how optimistic are you about the future of Afghan women in Afghanistan?

If the new government is a democratic government then we hope that the same progress will continue. If Taliban take over, then the progress already achieved will be lost and Afghan/Pashtun women will be further pushed in the stone age.
