My maternal grandfather was my role model for a long time. He prayed five times a day, and everyone respected him. I was the only kid in the neighborhood that went to the mosque and that made my grandfather very proud. He always treated me like an adult and he always treated me seriously. I used to question him and he'd answer with the best of his abilities.
On the flip side, my grandfather being a man of his time was a racist. He used to beat his kids when they were younger and also he'd beat anyone who annoyed him. He slapped his superior at work and was forced to retire early.
My grandfather is no longer my role model because I cannot accept racism as normal and also I cannot condone beating kids.
