  • Regionalism

In Afghanistan its not about what race you're, race is a purely European idea. In Afghanistan where you from is the important thing. Where you from means, where you originally came from, where your forefathers are from and what dialect of your language you speak.

In other words someone from Kandahar and another from Kunar are technically both Pashtun, but in reality they're as alien to one another than someone from Kandahar and someone from Balkh.

Regionalism is everything in Afghanistan, even on the neighborhood level. I remember there used to be fights in our neighborhood because some guys from another neighborhood were just passing by. The same you can experience in gang neighborhoods of the west, but back home every neighborhood was a sort of gang. But then a gang is nothing but a mini tribe.

So, when Massoud spoke of Tajiks and pashtuns, he fails to recount how the people of Kabul reacted to Bacha Saqaw. I mean, everyone was up in arms against them and when Bacha Saqaw was killed by Nadir Khan, everyone in Kabul celebrated.

Nadir Khan put his hand on the Quran and promised Bacha Saqaw that if he give up and surrendered, he would be spared, but when Bacha Saqaw give himself up he was executed with many of his people. So, Nadir Khan did not practice Pashtunwali or even Musilmani.

Afghanistan is an extremely complex country that cannot be simply defined by stupid Europeans ideas of categories and classes and races.

Saqaw was and I'm sure still is a job where the Saqaw or water carrier brings water to houses and charges money.

The real name of Bache Saqaw was Habibula and he was from Kalakan, thus Habibula Kalakani, which is nicely relevant to this thread about regionalism in Afghanistan.

During his reign there was absolute terror in Kabul. His people broke and enter houses and stole whatever they could. His men would kidnap boys and girls but mostly boys because they were out and about.

In 1992 I personally experienced Shurai Nezar, looting houses of Hindus in Karte Parwan. During the night there would be screams and shouting and begging and we knew what is happening but no one ventured out.

He was assassinated by a school boy named Abdul Khaliq.

The interesting bit is that Nadir Khan defeated the Bache Saqaw forces with British money and weapons. He paid up all the tribes who joined him with British money and weapons.

Another interesting bit is that Bache Saqaw movement was a religious one and it included Pashtun tribes as well. All of them were against Amanula Khan reforms. So, today when they spin Bache Saqaw as some Tajik freedom fighter is a complete lie and laughable.
