  • Nowroz 2014

Afghanistan is preparing to host Nowroz 1393 (New Years 2014). Nowroz festival is one of the ancient and historic traditions of Afghanistan celebrated for thousands of years. This year will be very special since Afghanistan is preparing to be the host country for Nowroz 1393. According to Afghan officials, various Ministries have been given the task to move forward with the preparations. This will be a great opportunity for cultural exchange, as several countries in the region that celebrate Nowroz will come together in Kabul to enjoy the festivities. The Ministry of Information and Culture, Afghanistan’s Chamber of commerce and Industries, the Agha Khan Foundation, Kabul University, the National Olympic Committee, and Radio Television of Afghanistan have taken the responsibility to prepare programs related to Nowroz.

Do you think hosting Nowroz festivities in Afghanistan is a good opportunity to establish better regional cooperation?

Do you know, there is a tradition in Afghanistan during Nawroz where they hoist prayer flags. The most famous one is in Mazar where Hazrat Ali Shrine is. However, there is no prayer flag tradition in Islam, so guess where the prayer flag lifting tradition came from.

Prayer flag and tying prayer clothes, which in Afghanistan after Islam became a simple cloth is a Budhist tradition, very strong in Tibet. The whole concept of shrines in Afghanistan where people tie clothes is a Buddhist tradition, it has nothing to do with Islam. Its as if Budhism is still there in Afghanistan... Heck, the word Sura that Afghans use in regard to Quran is from Sutra.

I'm not a Buddhist but my interest in Buddhism and mostly other cultures has given me this insight... Anyway, just something to cheer you up a bit Aria-Khan.

The Nawroz festival in Kabul is held at Sakhi Sahib grounds, which is a Shrine with a prayer flag and a large graveyard surrounding it.

Here is the video of raising the prayer flag at Sakhi Shrine in Kabul. KABUL NAWROZ (Dari) - YouTube

                  Nowroz Mubarak

                  Happy Nowroz Everyone!

This year Afghanistan will celebrate the New Year 1393 as preparation for the Presidential and Provincial Council elections are underway. In addition Afghanistan will be the host nation for Nowroz celebration with heads of states and other officials from neighboring countries attending the festivities in Kabul’s Paghman hills. We would like to take this opportunity and offer our best wishes to all who celebrate Nowroz worldwide, especially the people of Afghanistan. With God’s blessings we hope that this year, 1393, will be a year full of happiness, peace, and progress.

I don't think Pashtuns should participate in such things.
