Unconscious is one of the part of mind/psyche . The other two parts are Conscious and Sub conscious/preconscious. This division goes like ego(preconscious) , id and super ego(unconscious) of Sigmund Freud.
Preconscious is the window between the unconscious and conscious and is generally depicted as part of unconscious.
Unconscious is the reservoir of our feelings, memories, urges, desires which are not known at the moment of behavior but influence our personality. In psychoanalysis it is very important to know the unconscious.
If you 'believe' in the unconscious, you'll begin to experience 'the unconscious'. If you believe in God, you'll begin to experience God. If you believe that Osho has changed your life, you'll begin to see what you think is positive change in your life. If you see a crow and think that is a sign of bad luck, you'll experience bad luck and attribute it to the crow.
Believing is at the root of all superstition. The moment people stop believing and actually deal with facts then life changes. For instance, some girl thinks she's quirky and not normal; she takes pleasure in that fact and enjoys the personality she projects to the world, then suddenly she realizes why she is 'different' and the whole false image that she had built in her mind about herself collapses.
This brings us to the question of what is reality and who we're in actuality. The simple answer is that we're nothing, there is nothing, all this personality that we have created is a result of our memory, which is shaped by society that we have lived in and people close to us. If we lose our memory we're empty and our personality and so called character vanishes into thin air.
Dreams are not something from the unconscious, but if you begin to think they're then your dreams begin to become like that, in other words, if you think in Freudian terms, then your dreams begin to be filled with Freudian symbolism.
In simple terms there is no greater Truth out there, its all nothing but our imagination.

someone needs to define what is "different"; because frankly I don't know
