if we mix self-deception with a broader definition, we have a lot to talk about. psychologists over the past 50 years have demonstrated the sheer genius people have at convincing themselves of congenial conclusions while denying the truth of inconvenient ones. you can call it self-deception, but it goes by the names rationalization, wishful thinking, defensive processing, self-delusion. there is a robust catalog of strategies people follow to believe what they want to, and we research psychologists are hardly done describing the shape or the size of that catalog. this rationalization can lead people toward false beliefs, or perhaps more commonly, to hang on to false beliefs they should reconsider

Psychology is a science of mind and behavior and both are not material. Psychology wants to imitate sciences like Physics and Chemistry to be natural, exact, verifiable and conducted through senses, observation and experiments but it is not possible because the subject matter is different. It is not matter but mind and its manifestation, the behavior.

Keeping the above in view subjects like self deception etc cannot be defined like formula of water or Newton's laws. Reality is not that real in mental and spiritual sciences.

The stages are matter......mind.......soul. Some are only materialists /realists, others only idealists and some only spiritualists but I am for the division of reality into its three dimensions...material, mental/behavioral and spiritual.

Many homosexuals are victims of child abuse. Yet they say they are gay because the re born this way.

Many atheists I know are educated people with emotional or social disorder.because of their difficult youth they are angry with their creator. So they think by denying he exists they can get even.
