They said, "O Allaah’s Messenger! Do you mean to say that we will follow the Jews and the Christians?"

this event is done to counter the miss world competitions which i believe that hadeeth refers to.

so this is opposing that influence, and how is being hafiz of Quran following christians and jews?

beauty pageants are a waste of time which is why it's wrong. Not because it's an "imitation of the kufar". Whatever you do to develop your character should not be a competition or to please strangers.
They should have spent the time they wasted over this to compete over making blankets or pillows for the less fortunate. Develops their skills and gives them a chance for some healthy competition.

lets compare this to treatement of an heroine addict.
you dont just deny such a person some sort of medicine to calm his addiction down. offcourse you dont give the person heroine but you give him a medicine which can give him some rest but that wouldnt be necessary if the person wasnt addict in the first place.

the same way some scholars instead of explaining people how it is bad to bow down to graves or ask the dead ,they go and break down graves which can only serve the exact opposite of what they want to achieve.

when somebody is dying and in pain ,you dont push them to say shahada, they may say something bad in that state.
