My grandfather, khuda biamorzish, used to say, when women talk, its like a cow standing on a field and defecating. In other words, if you listen to women your life is ruined... Its no surprise therefore that Afghan men are perhaps the most misogynistic men in the world, even though paradoxically they all worship their mothers - or so they pretend.

My contention is that with our women, its a case of self-fulfilling prophecy. Its as if they're programmed to piss men and then get abused... Or perhaps they're raised with such low-opinion of themselves that abuse is perhaps to them, attention, and if I might say so, even love.



P.S. If anyone say something bad about my grandfather, I'll rip you a couple of new ones.

misogyny exists in all cultures since the weaker sex tend to be abused, but Pashtuns are not the most misogynistic in the world. Pashtun neighbors like the Persians and Indians are worse.

You know, you're actually right. In my own experience the Pashtun men who have married to our extended family were almost always far more docile and level headed, and in fact this has caused their wives to abuse them because those women were used to far more nasty fathers and brothers.

i was talking to a friend the other day and he was telling me about how in uzbekistan they refer to women as naqis ul aqal. the term is not used as a derogatory term but it synonymous for a woman.
and in jewish culture, there is a special prayer for men that the say to thank God for not having them be born as women.
what your grandfather did not understand is how much of that sort of a woman's behavior is the result of his doings. how much of it he and other men like him are directly responsible for. in a society like that, the man sets the bar of expectation and the woman aims for it. he expects her to be like a grazing cow, that is as far as she would drag herself to be. if being whiny and needy is the only way she gets your attention then whiny and needy is what she will end up being.
and it has nothing to do with them being women. if men were treated the same way, i am sure that similar behavior could be seen in them the next day.

You could be right, because you seem to have my grandfather on your side. Not much I can do.

Naqis-ul-aqle was a term that my grandfather used quite often in regards to women. In fact it was his favorite misogynistic term.

Your grandfather was afraid of women.
Of women with an opinion.

Reason:
strong and educated women have their own mind and make their decisions.
Men in cultural frameworks who inhabite a rugged area where land to grow wheat or hold cattle and where water is scarce see property, land and women as limitted resources thus women become something they need to "survive" or spread their genes.
Having alot of sons allows you defend yourself better, lowers the risk to lose property or die alone when you are alone and can´t work or defend yourself.

It has alot of sociological and anthropological reasons but nevertheless your grandfather was somehow dull, too.
