Afghan Youth and the 2014 Elections

According to statistics about 60 percent of Afghan voters are comprised of the youth. Despite this large numbers of potential young voters, some analysts believe that the Afghan government has failed to address issues related to the youth and their involvement in the upcoming 2014 elections. In addition, youth activists have also expressed concern over the non existence of programs to empower this large percentage of the population. In an effort to change this, some Afghan lawmakers have begun a campaign to encourage the youth to cast their vote without discriminating on the basis of ethnicity, race, or language. The campaign is titled, Role of Youth in the Elections, and is aimed to encourage them to take an active role in the political process in order to elect a qualified and able President. Members of the campaign agree that the Afghan youth can play a key role in bringing peace and institutionalizing democracy in the country. They believe better jobs and educational opportunities are the two fundamental needs of the youth and the lack of it forces many of them to leave the country and seek asylum elsewhere. They need to be better informed about the candidates, their platforms, and the election process. According to analysts, one way to achieve this is through radio, broadcast media, as well as social media and twitter since rural Afghanistan listens to radio, while urban areas have access to TV and social media. Clearly the youth is Afghanistan’s future policy makers and their future depends on the outcome of the elections. Government entities, the media, and the youth all bear a responsibility to elect the right candidate and save their country from falling into another civil war.

How can Afghan youth play an active role in the upcoming presidential election? And can the youth of Afghanistan overcome the ethnic, racial, and language barriers that are considered by some an impediment in electing the right candidate?
