Hats Off to Lewanaye Zalmay, Gulalai, and Qratagai for the useful points about driking...

Humans have been drinking since time immemorial. And the habit and its lack thereof is not linked with morality. Excessive drinking may be bad/injurious in individual cases but there is no definite evidence to show it ever caused large-scale death of people e.g. like religious extremism did. The probability that a religious extremist will commit heinous crimes against humanity is much larger than the probability that an alcoholic person will harm another person. If he/she did, that would not be by choice or intention. This cannot be said of a religious person who is convinced of the rightuousness of his act-and its reward in the world hereafter-when he/she kills.

Waee kana...you caught me..oh noo, I just wanted to be a "good, hayanaka, paaka safa jinaiy" for a while...kho dera ookhyara ye Qrratugai...geera de kum..hahahaha....There is this weird metality prevalent amongst the religous people (hence the so-called moralists), that those who support drinking even the sensible one, are actually alcoholic abusers themselves (and that's where I put the disclaimer). They just can't understand the social/cultural/medical reason for abstaining from drinking...as long as you look at the things from religious perspective, they are correct, otherwise you will be stoned to death,lolz..

Now that you have caught me red-handed, here I put another disclaimer (this time a true one though :P)

Disclaimer: I drink, smoke, curse, and also gamble excessively. I don't brush my teeth anymore.

...or how about this? 99% of Pashtuns are Pashtuns and they don't drink. Got it?

Shlombay...I am not surprised to hear this from you. I actually know what to expect from you..Yeah do pray for me although I highly doubt it will work...By the way, what's up with your immigrant complex? Is it like some new kind of superority-cum-inferiority complex recently discovered? There is no LINK between the immigrant/non-immigrant status of somebody and alchoholism/smoking. Your logic is completely absurd: the forefathers of America were immigrants as well and I am sure they must have been involved in drinking since they were non-muslims (that's what the justification you provide here)...It would be great if you study some history of USA. A word of caution: Being born to immigrant parents is just not enough to validate your point. Manana

              I will pray for you.

Lolz @ your "stating the obvious". Here is the deal: I will talk to you again on this issue only after you pay a visit to the Muslim countries.

                  Says who?

And do Pukhtuns not drink because they're Muslims? If so, why do you think many other Muslims drink very commonly and openly throughout the Muslim world (I mean, not just in the west but IN Muslim countries, like Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Malaysia, etc.)? If you're gonna say, "Well, I can't speak for them since I don't know them," then on the same token, do you know ALL -- or even a majority -- of Pukhtuns well enough to claim that they don't drink? It's more than possible that they drink, but you just don't hear about it.

It's another thing, however, to say that "Pashtuns are not supposed to drink because they're Muslims."

Well, yeah, duh. Haven't you heard yet - EVERYTHING is wrong with America and the rest of the west. Yes, the west is just inherently bad, and everyone who comes here just automatically goes really bad ... immoral in every sense of the word because that's what the west does to people. Now, mind you, men tend to remain "moral" and decent in spite of the zeal and attractions of the west, but only girls go bad when they're exposed to the bad, bad, evil, evil west. See, that totally helps explain why insecure people are scared of raising their daughters in the west or ever bringing them here. But it's totally okay to raise your boys here and to bring them here for whatever reason.

                  Good God.

Anyway, according to my observations, the Pashtuns and Muslims born and raised here who claim they'll never live in Afghanistan/Pukhtunkhwa are the ones who lack Pukhtunwali and Islam. The Immigrant Muslims/Pukhtuns aren't even close to as bad as those who are born here.

Of course, this is NOT to claim that ALL Muslims/Pukhtuns born in the west are bad -- in fact, I never even said they're bad -- or "immoral" or un-Islamic or anything. We can never generalize with this. We only know that there are "good" and "bad" in both immigrants and natives.

Then let me explain, Shlombay dear..I don't see any logical reasoning for the LINK between the immigrant/nonimmigrant status of someone and getting involved in offensive crimes such as drinkning, smoking, going to pubs etc (based on what you wrote in your 1st post). Drinking is quite unniversal and hence people do not necessarily have to come to USA to drink. Some of my class fellows were used to drink in Pekhawar.

I agree with you in part that some immigrants (e.g.the South Asian ones) would shed their inhibitions of offensive crimes once they step on the sinful soil of USA but that does not make them BAD people. This country provide them freedom to do anything as long as they do not harm anyone. A drinking guy is better to me than the one preaching religious fundamentalism and making divisions in the hearts and minds of people. At least, those who drink do not kill 200 REAL people to get 72 virgins in heaven.

Thanks for recalling me the fact that I am a (brainless?) woman, lol. Yeah my knowledge of this place might not be as much as yours but that does not mean that I am completely ignorant, lol. I hardly doubt my insanity would bring me this far and make me able to survive on one of the hardest places on planet on my own.I don't have to spend 20 years to know this place; my one hour experience on my first day here taught me everything about this soceity and place. Even in the presence of gangsters, alchoholics, smokers, homeless bums, gamblers, rapists, pedophiles, sex offenders etc..as a Pashtun woman, I have felt thousands times more secure here in the last 5 years compared to what I have spent in Pakhtunkhwa. I believe that a person of strong character remains strong regardless of the place, age, or the amount of time spent in a certain place under whatever circumstance. And most of that character is a product of your upbringing by parents and for that I am thankful to my parents.

G, Have you ever been to Flushing? There are 2 kind of Pashtuns(Afghans) you will meet.

1)Those that were born here(like me) we are usually calm, we mess around sometimes but we are more calm and dont care about the obvious.

2)The ones who just arrived from JFK and the next things you know in a month they are wasted, they are drugged up, they are already part of the local gang and they can hardly speak English yet they want to do everything bad in the books. I have friends like that, We call them FOBS.(Fresh of the boat.)
Thanks for the information...I am only allowed to socialize with dumb Americans, hardworking Chinese, notorious Russians, conceited Brits, resentful Africans, and pro-veg Indians, lol. You can meet them herehttp://www.nycskeptics.org/

I am yet to meet a Pashtun and Pakistani there

Hmm... Please quote me where I've EVER said -- in any thread, any post, anywhere online or anywhere else -- that drinking is as common in the west as it is in any other part of the world.

I will be waiting, wror gula. Manana.

If you're referring to my statement that Muslims in Egypt, Morocco, etc. drink, then clearly, you either have never been there yourself or don't know of anyone there. It's like one of the most accepted facts about the countries that in Ramadhan, all alcoholic shops and bars are closed, but they open a week after Ramadhan is over, and that's their busiest time of the years; that's when their business is most successful.

That fact, however, is not synonymous with any claim like "it's as common in the west as is it is in Egypt/etc." Even for the claim that drinking is most common IN the west, you'll need evidence, since your own observations are not enough for such a grand claim. But, no, I'm not interested in this, so no need to go searching for it 'cause I know what I know is true and what you've said doesn't in any way negate the fact I've provided above.
