Orrrrrrrr.. they live in countries where the devastation is clear. You live in Karachi, you're no where near as exposed to it as some of us here are.

Becoming an alcholic or a heavy drinker doesn't happen over night, it's a gradual process, where more of it is consumed as time goes on. The NHS are sick and tired of treating alchohol-related accidents, just ask Dreamer. A lot of people also think it's ridiculous how their treatment comes from tax payers money.

Alchohol is essentially drinking poison, don't know why those more knowldegeable would ever choose to consume it.

Smoking and Drinking not only injurious to health but also are big put offs.....
i just hate smokers....that too in public place.. where u are walking and a guy in front of u is walking and leaving all the smoke on u......in that case we become passive smokers....

passive smoking is more dangerous than active smoking....

Secondly, Alcohol was acceptable in Islam till the 7th year of the Flight, I guess.
Thirdly, it is a known fact that most of the Jihadi and terrorist organizations in the world who have killed thousands of Moslems and Non-Moslems are actively funded through Zakat and Khairaat money. What do you say about this?
As already mentioned, the harms greatly outweigh the benefits, as stated in the Qur'an:

"They ask you (O Prophet) concerning alcoholic drink and gambling. Say: 'In them is a great sin, and (some) benefit for men, but their sin is greater than their benefit.'" (Quran 2:219)

Such a ruling is only done for the benefit of an individual.

Yes, it was allowed once upon a time, however the five prayer weren't obligated on Muslims then. Drinking affects one's mind and so concentration, and since the prayers are spreadout throughout the day, being drunk would make this difficult.

Well if they're gonna mercilessly kill so many innocent people, I hardly think they care about drinking alcohol. It's also a well known fact that these people don't represent Islam, so it doesn't matter where they get their money from, they serve their own needs.

People turn to alchohol to ease their minds and problems, Muslims turn to God.

Some of the smartest people in the world enjoy their fine wines with their food or their Scotch sometimes just to get comfortable. Some of those nice people nvented the internet for us and made it possible for us to interact with one another.

People think that just because a person doesn't think of alcohol as a big sin, he must be the worst sort of person who would engage in gambling, "shirk and fornication", killing kittens, etc. That's not true at all. Most of the world's population drinks.

Of course excessive drinking is bad just as excessive religiosity is bad (both end up in people dying). However, there's nothing wrong with moderate drinking. Religious extremists from Saudi Arabia, the Bible Belt and Tel Aviv kill thousands every year but that doesn't mean we ban religion altogether.

Oh and no one drinks or smokes in my family.
"If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be".

"Knowledge will forever govern ignorance; and a people who mean to be their own governors must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives".

Excess of everything is bad---alcohol, drugs, money, wives, and religion.
Moderate amounts of alcohol (sensible drinking) have proved to be beneficial in that they reduce risk of heart diseases; lower diabetes risk; increase body sensitivity towards insulin intake; reduce/prevent blood pressure, gallstones, stress/depression, osteoporosis, poor cogniton and memory, erectile dysfunction, and Alzhiemer's diseases. These results were not found in both abstainers and heavy drinkers.

Heavy drinking/alcohol abuse/alchoholism is associated with a number of serious health risks such as liver cirrhosis, traffic injuries, sexual violence, miscarriage/stillbirth in pregnant women, alcohol poisioning, and a variety of cancers. The biggest health risk associated with smoking is lung cancer.

I see a reason for abstaining from excessive drinking/smoking for health and cultural reason but not for some divine reason.I wonder when people fail to provide a 'religious' reason for those who are/have sucking/sucked the blood of innocent people for as trivial reason as clean-shave, how come they are so swift in provinding 'divine reasons' for mundane affairs like drinking/smoking, toothbrushing, sleeping, or cursing?

Disclaimer: I don't drink, smoke, or curse at all. I do brush my teeth though.

I think excess of good things is very good.....for instance religion.
Usually a religous person obstain from Drugs, alchol, extra-marital sex and other immoral and unhealthy things. The more religous are you the more are you a moral person.

Alcohol temporarily increases brain serotonin function, but after that temporary rise, levels of serotonin fall below the normal level. This reduced serotonin level is linked to a heightened vulnerability to depression, increased risk of violent suicide, aggressive and impulsive behavior, and a tendency to further abuse alcohol, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). Alcohol consumption in any amount leads biologically (through serotonin) to a tendency to abuse it. There is no such thing as “responsible drinking on a society-wide level.

Islam forbid drinking because of its health risks. The subject of Islam is "human" and it cares about humans.

Don't you worry none, Luffy Jaan! I never take offense even when it's intended, wror gula

And I'll let Gulalai decide whether or not I'm "disappointed" in her decision to take excellent care of her health. Since you didn't get what I was saying to her, it's okay with me that you think that. Totally.

Brother Luffy, excess of everything is bad. As you said, that excess of religion is good. But as Ghani Khan said about Qazi Attaullah, the great Khudai Khidmatgar, and they were in Haider abad Jail, and Ghani Khan was bothered by his too much religious attitude. He writes:

Zan la ye kenawo awaz, ao ma la ye khog ghwagoona,
ka os tsa wayam, no bia wayee ayat
(perhaps wording is wrong but sense is ok)

So Brother luffy, you know that Quran ask us to be at the midth, not excessive relgious, that was the reason why Quran banned rahbaniat.

As Gulalai described, I did some research on cigarette and Hashish smoking and its low amount is too useful for immune system. However its excess is bad.
I read many papers regardintg alcohol, however its low amount is useful but its excess is bad. Why Quran stopped it completely because of addiction and very rare number of people can control themselves to the low or average amount.
However, no one will say here that it is halal, however its advantages and disadvantages can be discussed.

Umer Asghar Khan, tried his best to legalize Hashish (Chars) in Pakistan, and was his great supporter of his opinion as then we will have quality chars, and to have a kash of chars in a day or at least wekk is not bad. hahahhaha
