Because man is an animal. It's in our basic instincts to exert force (psychologically and physically) upon others and to dominate (by wealth, cultural power, military strength, etc). That behavior is present in the individual as well as at the state level. Of course, since man can reason, he is not always in a state of war, a state which his nature dictates.
Man is naturally afraid. He uses power to overcome that fear.Last edited by Levanaye Zalmaye; 07-08-2010, 02:12 AM."If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be".

Power is a tool of the Shoytaaaaaan-ul-Khabees-ul-khar-zoy to deceive man from his rightful duties that are towards Allah Subhaan-a-Wat'a'aala. The Shoytaaan aims to derail Muslims from the Righteous Path (Siraatul Mustaqeem). Real power only lies with Allah, for he is As-Samad (Eternal) whereas we are all temporary and we will all be judged by Him on that Day, the day on which mountains would fly like pieces of wool....
Therefore, it is upon us to lead righteous lives and not succumb to greed or else we will be the losers - the Kufaar and we will not be among the successful ones on the Day of Reckoning."If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be".
"Knowledge will forever govern ignorance; and a people who mean to be their own governors must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives".

It is a mix i.e.,
(1) the instinct-driven and the almost impulsive force in us compels us to compet with others for limited resources and opportunities to survive. It is the same kind of attitude we see in animals. When needs of animals are fullfilled, they stop exerting (brute) force.
(2) Humans in addition to the kind of instinctive force mentioned in (1) have a second kind of motive force i.e., the force to acquire unlimited aesthetic beauty. This force is not fundamental but rather was developed over long period of human evolution. Probably, when human beings became self-aware/self-conscious and developed aesthetic desire, they also developed the desire to be recognized (by others). Perhaps, here the quest for unlimited power arose.
The term power itself is complex one implying many kinds of different powers e.g., brute(physical) power, legal power, religious power, political power, economic power, power of beauty, etc.Last edited by Toramana; 07-08-2010, 04:21 AM.

I think I should describe it more appropriately. The desire to survive (in the face of competition with others) was initially present in humans. The desire for aesthetic perfection developed later as humans evolved. (The aesthetic desire needs expression and recognition) This second kind of desire seems to be responsible for thirst for unlimited powers in humans.
But one should think more about it.Last edited by Toramana; 07-08-2010, 04:44 AM.
