Modern western civilization has nothing to do with ancient Greco-Roman civilization or with Christianity. It is based upon western consumer capitalist culture. It promotes exactly the opposite values to Christianity, which preached humility, moderation, compassion, dedication, and forgiveness. However, consumer culture promotes arrogance, selfishness, greed and vengeance, exactly the opposite values.
Ancient western civilization evolved in Greece. The Romans defeated Greece, but mostly adopted its philosophy. Therefore, ancient western civilization can also be called Greco-Roman civilization. When Rome became Christian, then there was a confluence of Greco-Roman and Christian values. Christianity brought the light of the East to the West. It laid the foundation of traditional western civilization. This civilization flourished until the Renaissance. However, after the Industrial Revolution, the western culture of consumer capitalism replaced it. This consumerist culture only promotes the material aspect of life and has, for all practical purposes, abandoned spirituality, or collective conscience.
Modern consumer capitalist western philosophy is borne out of selfishness and greed. It promotes ego and makes one arrogant. The purpose of life is limited to achieving physical comforts and fulfilling all desires of mind. However, the tragedy is that individual comforts and desires cannot be fulfilled in isolation. Man is not an individual, but is a social being. Trying to achieve these desires without any consideration for overall welfare of society leads to frustration and depression.
Individualism and consumerism of western capitalist society is leading to chaos and anarchy. Moreover, desires cannot be defined and therefore, cannot be fulfilled. The more the western capitalism has evolved, the more it has led to growing frustration and depression. Eastern values and Christianity preached concepts of austerity and moderation, which mean as opposed to fulfilling desires, a person should live to fulfill his needs. Needs can be defined, therefore they can be fulfilled. Desires are like a mirage, the more you try to reach them, the more they move away from you.
The ever-growing western greed has led to aggressive wars to control resources of the world. All wars started by western capitalists were primarily started for this purpose. Just look at Iraq, Afghanistan, and Libya. Western capitalists are on the brink of starting another aggressive war in Syria. The sole purpose of this impending war is to control Middle Eastern oil.
Western capitalism has pushed the world to a stage where another war like Syria, East Asia, South China Sea, or the Indian subcontinent has the risk of becoming a Third World War, which will not only destroy western civilization, but can destroy the entire world. Western capitalist philosophy not only should be condemned, but should be completely exposed and rejected as the anti-thesis of civilization. It is reverting man to lower centers of existence. Therefore, it is reversing the process of evolution of human civilization.
