  • How bad do people pronounce your name?

Being blessed with strong muslim/afghan names always comes at the expense of having people butcher the name. so how bad has it been for you guys?

being named osman, in my "professional" life i am oz-men. "hey like donny osmond, right?" says some random son of a bitch who i am working with, i say no but by then my patience is gone and i am like whatever. interestingly enough, some of the mexicans i work with ask me more about the name and i go into the ottoman empire and the caliphs lol

the ali's, omars, and mo's have it easy but the osman's have to hear their beautiful name butchered, its like nails on a chalkboard.
There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.

My peers and teachers and have always pronounced my name as Ockmal even though its correctly pronounced as "Akmal." It never really irritated me that much because them being kaffirs and all, had never of such a unique Muslim name for it to be pronounced correctly on the first try.

I remember this deluded Guyanese guy who I used to work with would pronounce it as "akbal" or "Iqbal" even though I told the idiot countless times it was Akmal. Seriously how do you miss pronounce a 5 letter name? I think he was doing it on purpose to piss me off (even though I didn't care) or he was just stupid lol.

i guess the turkish/persian influence on afghans was stronger than the arab one. not to mention that outside of arabic speaking societies, osman is pretty popular probably because of pronounciation. usman/osman does well in africa too.

The phoneme /θ/ does not exist in Pashto, Farsi, Urdu etc. Expect Uthman to be pronounced Usman/Osman in these languages.

@Randolph - have you heard how many 'Khan's mispronounce their own names? I find it near unforgivable when people who should know better cannot say/are embarrassed to say خ in خان so that what you get is 'Caan'. Makes your blood boil.

When it comes to names, I think the Chinese have it worst. They have given up, and now have secondary names. They will tell their name is Sean, mean while it's some combination of X and Z.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!
