BTW, i was speaking Urdu, i don't know punjabi, but i understand what your saying like 75%... By two languages understanding eachother Hindu/Urdu to Punjabi is like Ghilzai Pashto to Wazirwola Pashto.

Reason why Urdu is the national language of Pakistan is because.

          1. It is an already made, controlled, standard language, it already has it's own set of rules for formal use.

          2. Muhajir people of Pakistan were the dominant ethnic group since PAkistan was founded, though this has been dispersed with Punjabis now a days.....

          3. Punjabis can understand Urdu anyways, not completely but enough for practical uses, 60% of PAkistanis speak Punjabi and a majority of them can partially understand Urdu even if they haven't learnt it in a formal manner.... Pashto and Balochi speakers must learn to understand.

          4. The Sindhi speakers obscurely understand Urdu, obscurely,... if they haven't learnt Urdu.

          5. Punjabi as alot of dialects, Pakistani or Western Punjabi has heck tooo many dialects, it would take alot more time to make a standard dialect, if you made Lahori the language of Pakistan, it wouldn't work for some reason as URdu seems to work as a better mediator language for Pakistan.

I can understand and speak punjabi fluently due to the fact that we have had land in Punjab for a very long time but spent most of our time in Afghanistan So we would speak Punjabi with the workers and such. There were also neighboring Afghan villages as well as my uncle says. Ours was called Afghanay or ana or something, I don't remember. But when I do speak Punjabi, punjabiyan get so suprised haha.
