  • Alcohol in Afghan restaurants

I've been going to many Afghan restaurants in the NYC area and I see alot of customers bringing in alcohol to drink with their food, some places even have bars in the restaurant.

Most of the time many Muslims seemed to feel uncomfortable being around drunk people and some questioned the food being halal or not.

Not sure how common this is because other places in the area will not allow alcohol at all.

I have friends who are looking into opening up an afghan restaurant but have two different points of view on the matter.

What would you do allow it or not?

it will not be good for the business. a traditional restaurant draws in families and chances of families not wanting to be or seen in a restaurant with drunk people roaming around are higher than otherwise. if an afghan wants to go out to drink, the last place he would want to go to is an afghan restaurant where he will bump on to other afghans. your costumer count will decline due to the negative reputation and even people who may come there to dine will not bring their extended family members, wives, daughters or children.
you want little ideas that will attract more costumers, not the other way around.

Zahro you have to understand, this is buissnes. Almost every Muslim owned restaurant (that I know) pulls these kind of moves. A few years ago we ran into this Muslim owned dominos which served only pepperoni pizza. Once Muslim lady confronted then that why they only sell pepperoni, he replied and said "it is secretly halal, but we do this so the Christians can buy". If it was labeled as halal, do you think kaffirs would have any interest to purchase food from them? Of course not. My dads friend who owns a pizza store in Toronto also pulls this manuver and same with my uncle in NYC.

Like I said, its just for buissnes reasons. Also the bar thing in afghan restaurants you mentioned is plain proof this for buissnes.

domino's is a franchise branch. they have to have everything that the company decides on so the owner does not get to decide what he does or does not want. and it's pretty much common sense to know that selling alcohol is haram so the advice i gave him was on business.

Here in the west the mentality and the way of thinking is different compared to where you live. I thought u said that U and Muslims had a bad past with eachother, now you are buying their food? Lol.

I have lots of problems with muslims but I have some friends which are muslims.

I was in two drive schools.
The first belongs to a non-muslim and it was awful, he was screaming the whole time and teached me nothing.
I change the school. This drive school belongs to a muslim and my new driving instructor is also a muslim. He teached me very good and I learned a lot.

A muslim at my work said yesterday. I'm doing my drive licence only at non muslims school cuz muslim sell the drive licences.

I'm not buying I'm also eating this food.

As long as the food was made in a proper way (hygienic) and taste good I eat it!

Kushan Prince what happened to you in the last time?
I see change which are not good.

in the west, alcohol is a major cultural thing.

if your restaurant/shop does not offer it, people will go to one that does.

Let's draw a line between restaurants. Afghans, in the tri-state area(majority in NYC), own about 800 restaurants. Of the 800, about 700 are fast-food, fried chicken restaurants. Within these fried chicken restaurants, NONE serve alcohol.

Afghans also own these 'top-class' restaurants(Think Helmand Hotel near MIT), along with others, which do serve alcohol. So let's not use the term majority. The only conclusion we can reach is that there exists, a tiny segment of Afghan restaurants that serve alcohol. The overwhelming majority does not!

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

                        @OP

If you live in the NYC area, I will warn you that most of the Afghan restaurants in the area (i.e. in Manhattan) do not serve halal meat either since they claim it is too expensive for them and that there is a lack of demand. I know the ones in Flushing are sound--like Chopan and Bakhtar but be careful elsewhere. Always ask.
