^ here in Canada I know them through college, what is a big surprise? there were Hindkowans even in Karachi, my mom knows them as well. Why do you get jealous about everything so easily? If you know Hindkowans in/from college in Canada, did you try asking them if they are considered Pashtuns?

I have never met a Hindkowan myself, but in fact my mother told me a few weeks ago that when she was at the supermarket "a really nice young man" came up to her and asked her where she was from? She told him Punjab, India and he told her "I am Pathan and I am from Pakistan". He works as a security guard at the supermarket, but my mother said he does not work there all the time and it was the 1st time she had seen him. If I go there myself and see him, I will ask him who he is and from which exact place.

How comes that guy did not go to my mother and say something like "does it get hot in Tamil Nadu or Andaman Islands". Punjabi sounds like Tamil according to you.

Anway I have been inside Pashtuns houses but they were all from KPK, not Afghanistan. The son-in-law and daughter of ex-Pres Ishaq Khan of Pakistan used to live near where I lived and in fact I used to see them around quite often. So I am not a fake like you or jealous of anyone.

Hindko is morphologically and syntactically a dialect of Punjabi and speakers of Punjabi and Hindko understand one another. This makes the language non-comprehensible with Pashto, so from an ethnolinguistic point of view, Hindkowaans are seperate from Pashtuns. From a historic point of view, some Hindkowaans are the descendents of Pashtuns who were Panjabiised and culturally there are some commonalities between some of the features of Hindko culture with Pashtunwali (perhaps because of proximity or because features were carried over).

On the whole though, in my experience, despite claims of being 'Pathan' the political self-identity and outlook of Hindkowaans is very different to most Pashtuns. It was Hindkowaans who resisted the terms Pashtunkhwa when the province was renamed; they tend to be more pro-establishment. Those Hindkowaans who have some Pashto tend to be 'Pashtun' a very poor second as enough time has passed for their ethnolinguistic identity to have separated them into a group that is now actively campaigning for its own individual recognition.

On a separate note, I do find it ironic that an Urdu speaker and a Panjabi speaker are squabbling in this thread as both those languages have much more in common than Pashto has with Hindko.

Hindkowans are speakers of Hindko as a language not a race or ethnic group. Pashtun is an ethnic group not only speakers of Pashto language.

There are Pashtuns like Jadun, Tarin, Swati etc who speak Hindko so they are Hindkowans by language but Pashtuns by ethnicity. There are others like Gujars, Rajas, Sardars etc who are non Pashtuns but Hindkowans by langauge.

Pathan is a derogatory word for Pashtuns which is offensive and may be avoided.

Hindokwans are nothing but pashtuns speaking another language. Kind of like the pashais who claim to be pashtun
