KABUL (PAN): A number of students on Tuesday rallied for naming the Kabul Education University after ex-president Prof. Burhanuddin Rabbani and underlined the need for continued training on the campus.
In response to a Cabinet recommendation, President Hamid Karzai last week issued a decree, renaming the university after Rabbani -- the Jamiat-i-Islami party head and the government’s chief negotiator who was assassinated on Sept. 20, 2011.
The protesting students slammed aversion to the move as prejudiced and illogical. They lamented protests by a small number of students, backed by some elements, damaged national unity and disrupted the routine training process.
One of the protestors, Zikrullah Nazari, said: "Some students are encouraged to oppose renaming of the university and disrupt routine the training process.” Without naming anyone, he said they backed the government’s decision.
"Prof. Burhanuddin Rabbani is a martyr of peace and rendered the ultimate sacrifice for bringing peace to the country. In recognition of his services, the university should be named after him," he suggested.
Another protestor, Abdul Matin, said: "We want to show opponents of the move that Rabbani’s mission continues, though he is no longer there."
In a four-article declaration, the students said they were supportive of renaming the university after Prof. Rabbani. They asked the government to identify masterminds behind the opposition to the move and put them on trial.
