ATTOCK, Sept 26: Traffic at Islamabad-Peshawar Motorway (M-1) remained suspended as angry villagers near Chacch Interchange (Attock) blocked the road on Wednesday evening in protest against the killing of three teenage boys.
Sajjad, Mehran and Kashif, aged between 13 and 15, had been abducted on September 9 from their village of Jalalia in Hazro police area, and later murdered. Working on a tip-off, the police arrested the seven kidnappers, including Allahyar, Suhaleen and Sabir on Tuesday evening.
People stormed Hazro police station on Wednesday evening, demanding the police to hand over the kidnappers so that they could do justice on their own since legal proceeding in court would take time. They also showed no-confidence in the police.
The police refused to comply with these demands, and shifted the kidnappers to an unknown place amid tight security.
Later on, the protesters gathered at Chacch Interchange on M-1 to stage a demonstration and blocked the road, causing a huge traffic jam. They also chanted slogans against the police and the murderers.
The district police officer M0hammad Hilal Khan along with other police officials, including SP Investigation Abbass Majid Khan Marwat, SDPO Hazro Police circle DSP Syed Akbar Abbass and SSP National Highway & Motorway Police, Tahir Khan rushed to the scene and tried to convince the protesters to remove the blockade. The demonstrators refused to do so until and unless the killers were handed to them.
Negotiations to end the three-hour blockade were on when a speeding car from Islamabad, which had refused to halt despite being signalled to do so, broke through the police cordon and launched itself into the demonstration. Five persons, including the driver, were injured in the incident and transferred to the tehsil headquarters (THQ) hospital Hazro.
