i have done a lot of embroidery and i prefer using the type of thread in the 1st video. to really appreciate the amount of time and effort in those works of the afghan women, one has to do it or see it done.
those 2, braid and basket i have never tried. good instruction clips, wawrina.
i have used chain stitch a lot for sewing spirals. round and round in different colours to create a circle.

this is a backpack and shoulder bag i embroidered using chain stitch on the centre and running stitch in the border. the 4 pieces that ray out to the corners are appliqued pices from fabric i printed.
bit raggedy as it is about 7 years old and has been to india twice and very much used.
the peice on the very left with a little embroidered and beaded bit, is the shoulder strap.Attached FilesLast edited by faye; 09-01-2012, 11:06 PM.

^those are awesome. mine is very primitive in comparison. simple but effective
yesterday, there was a program on tv, where an english man went to areas of india and was visiting a tribe who had banned embroidery working. the villagers claimed it took too much time and they send the girls to school instead.
their wedding garments were absolutely fantastic and colourful, embroidered works that had been handed down through the families.
such a shame to lose such a craft.
