In the artical they are saing "ethnic Afghans" since when are HAzara TAjik and Uzback ethnic Afghans -_-.Originally posted by shadowgovernerthis doesnt make sense since many of these ethnicities came later to Afghanistan and didnt always live here so we cant have a common ancester.
Hazaras, uzbek and turkmens are from mongolia and they have no history of being in this region as Pashtuns and persians do.
bottom line is i dont trust any study coming from pseudo non Afghan sources about Afghans.

or should we just make stuff up like you do?

the article is saying that all Afghans have a common neolithic ancestral group they stem from and that different groups intermixed with different peoples. Thus Tajiks and Pashtuns are more or less closely related.
This also means that Pashtuns as an ethnic group is probably very recent and not "5000" years old.

the chart on the websites seems to be incorrect. Slavs/Russians being closer to pashtuns then tajiks afghans seems like a joke, even NW indians are being shown close to russians. That is obviously not true. That chart maybe related to R1a1a perhaps, not sure

True, indeed those features may have come from indo aryan and other invasions from the north, but I think autmosal dna from every one in the region reveals they are very mixed and this is the reason the chart on the website seems incorrect, unless I am reading it wrongOriginally posted by faye View Postphotos of pashtuns look just like northern europeans. i can go into town here and see similar faces.

Seems OK to me from reading the whole original study.
It is saying (as I understand it) that Pashtuns, Tajiks, Hazaras and Uzbeks in Afghanistan originated from a common ancestral population that later split and made up these four groups, and these four groups were then added to by later migrations. The Hazaras now even have an African lineage in them.
No doubt the study could be made more accurate by dividing and showing large groups into individual sub-groups. eg "North Indians" are very varied and would be better to divide them into sub-groups to see if results remain the same or show anything different? Same could perhaps be done with Pashtuns e.g. by comparing different tribes/clans.
If I understand this correctly, even today Pashtuns appear to be clustering closer to some "Indic" groups like Sindhis (not to mention those dreaded Punjabis)? I will email one of the authors with this question.
I think this is similar to results from other studies seen so far? If anyone can see different then let us know.
Here is link to the original study referred to by the Science Daily story in post #1: http://www.plosone.org/article/info%...e-0034288-g002
Above link is referred to here: http://newswatch.nationalgeographic....aphic-project/
Copied below is the chart of the timeline in thousands of years for the original ancestral population splitting starting from 10,800 years ago and then original Pashtun group formed 4700 years ago and other branch later split into Tajik & Hazara & Uzbek as shown.

Copied below what is called the principal component analysis (PCA).

Chart might be fine (and you cannot just go by skin color and eye color or shape of nose or shape of face).Originally posted by Karachi View Postthe chart on the websites seems to be incorrect. It depends on the samples, does it not? Depends what/who were the "NW Indians", "north Indians" samples but even the "South Indians" in the chart are shown closer to some of the "Caucasus" group and "north Indians" and Pashtuns further from the "Caucasus" group? That is unusual and might be worth verifying.
It is worth asking exactly what the chart is trying to show? I am assuming it is showing todays population and not the population ancestry.
I think this is chart you are referring to:

That why i find it hard to grasp how there is a common genetic heritage, you have pashtuns that look like northern Europeans, you have Pashtuns that have more Caucasian features than actual Caucasians but then you also have very south asian looking ones aswel, and then to say they all share the same genetics as tajik, uzbek, hazara just doesn’t make sense it confuses it more...but hey if this will unite us then am all up for this news----------

Pashtuns were Kushans and before that were Sythians, they were also Pactyans, all these peoples were the same race as Aryans from the north so it wouldnt make sense to say they have those features as a result of invasions from themselves.Originally posted by Karachi View PostTrue, indeed those features may have come from indo aryan and other invasions from the north, but I think autmosal dna from every one in the region reveals they are very mixed and this is the reason the chart on the website seems incorrect, unless I am reading it wrong----------

I think its better to say that some Kushans who came as invaders were assimilated to pashtuns rather than saying Kushans were pashtuns because quite clearly Kushans came as invaders from somewhere in eastern China.Originally posted by Manzareh View PostPashtuns were Kushans and before that were Sythians, they were also Pactyans, all these peoples were the same race as Aryans from the north so it wouldnt make sense to say they have those features as a result of invasions from themselves.
One thing is for sure that Pashtuns came from the North of Hindu kush because pashto is classified as North Eastern Iranian language.
