Hey guys!! just wondering, do you find nikkah and legal marriage to be as important as eachother?

would you be happy with just a nikkah, but not registering your marriage?

i am doing both and changing my name - so me and my husband and our kids (one day, inshallah) all have the same family name... but i have heard people who like to keep their own family name etc..

what are your views with this?!

Weird!! I was just thinking about this wada business (of course not in the same regards as yourself hehe)

    well first off Mubarak

2nd off ... since you're in the states/west ...or maybe this would apply everywhere.. you would want your marriage to be registered for benefits that follow.

Changing name...I know kids are suppose to have their fathers for lineage purposes..same thing as a girl gets married she is suppose to keep her last name for lineage purposes but if she/husband desires last name can be changed .. if anyone knows more they can elaborate on this (this is from an Islamic Perspective if I am not mistaken).

how you choose to celebrate your love for each other is between the two of you. After the nikah of course.. Don't pull on a khuda gawah...as for keeping your own name.. Do you really want to fill a form for your child for the rest of your life with their last names being the same as their father's but yours different?? Even if your parents don't have any sons to carry their name, your children are named after their father so there is no point to build that wall in between.

I am no bird, and no nest ensnares me.

non commercial would cost less if he was in charge himself which he plans on doing. right now it's n herat but soon it will be in qanadahar.

            lol@name changing

next you will want a double-barrelled name like all the so-called trendy engaged women at my workplace.

lol @ double barrelled surname - noooo i dont want that...

the reason I ask is that, where i am they dont really classify you as married unless you are legal...to me thats not important- i will know i am married, but I would like for myself and my husband to be recognised in legal ways aswell

So a question to guys - do you or do you not want your wife to change their surname?

and to the married people - did you/your wife change your surname?

I would leave it upto my wife. If she wants to keep her family name then its fine with me.

I might even adopt her family name for a change

Registered marriage is a very smart thingn to do... of course with nikkah. being his wife legally in the system will give you much more rights in western society.

i got married with nikkah of course and a registered marriage... and i chose to keep my surname... my surname is my tribe's name and that gives me my identity, shows where i am from... and much more important to me. . and he agreed of course... it made sense to him as well.

anyways i would suggest registered marriage and nikkah both
