Sikhs have made a respectable mark on the world stage, successfully channelling their 'martial' status into education and commerce.

Fact: Last week whilst browsing in the market, we ended up at Sikh vendors. The conversation started initially in Urdu/Hindustani but when the guy heard my conversation with my wife, he asked - "Tasu Pukhtana ye?" and carried on the remainder of the conversation in Pashto. He was a fairly senior gentleman and when I enquired, he told me that he was born in Peshawar.

Oddly, I felt the guy was more Pashtoon than Sikh, since the other guys in the store were not able to use Pashto in the same way. Goes to show the power of language in bridging divides and how it might be more natural for a Muslim-Panjabi and a Sikh-Panjabi/Muslim-Bengali & Hindu Bengali to 'buddy' than it would be for two Muslims who don't have a language in common.
