Yes I heard that too from Afghans during the Soviet Jihad days.
They said Spetsnaz - Soviet Special Forces - agents
were dressed up as mullahs sometimes.
These [not many but a few ] were engaged in
molding the society into greater receptivity toward Communism.

These Afghans said that the British had used the same tactic
and actually widely deceived people as mullahs.
In short, they didn't just pretend to be and deceive no one.
They were quite successful at fooling many into trusting them.

However this guy is likely no threat to anyone.
He looks befuddled.
It'll take him 5 years to learn how to do namaz,
looks like to me from the hesitant, stumbling way
he recited the Kalima.

You forget that the current Global Hegemonic order is Distinctly Anglo in Flavor; and follows the Huntingtonian Model, even if England Proper is not powerful enough, their predecessors are. And thus the Anglo Imperialism and Imperialism of any European or Pan-European power

Even if this smokescreen peddled by Neo-Imperial Hegemony from the Huntingtonian European Capitalist Block of an "Arabized Sunni version of Iran" were true; Taliban and other extremist red herrings were byproducts of their manufacturing and have nothing to do with Islamism, and proof is most Learned Islamic Scholars discredit them on all fronts.
