    Mankial Valley

The beautiful valley of Swat is a conglomeration of different and varied valleys and plains. The southern region is comparatively wide and open, consisting of plains that are cultivated through out the year and yield extremely large quantity of fruits and crops. The Northern region is a congregation of tall high rising mountains where small valleys provide little ground for cultivation and residentiary area for the small mass of population scattered in different groups and families. The valley of Mankial is one such place located in the north of Swat on the main road leading to Kalam. The total distance of the valley from Saidu Sharif is about eighty kilometers. The condition of the road is not gratifying but still the scenic beauty all around, the cool and invigorating breeze and the whirling, foamy and gurgling water of River Swat keep the visitors engaged and delighted.
The fascinating valley of Mankial is famous throughout Swat for its several sharp and jagged summits or peaks, which can be seen hundreds of kilometers away from down the plains. The tallest peak’s height is 18750 feet above the sea level. Several national and international mountaineers have attempted to reach these dizzy and awesome summits and in the course have lost their precious lives but still some others have conquered these intimidating heights. A Japanese mountaineer conquered mount Mankial in 1975. Climbing up these treacherous and unpredictable heights needs a strong heart, firm determination and above all strict professionalism.

Several ancient myths and tales are associated with the razor sharp peaks of Mankial. Most of the people believe that it is the abode of supernatural entities like fairies and jinns where intruding human beings are severely inflicted and who ever ventures into their dwellings either loses his life or is haunted by hallucination and illusions everafter. The immense height of the mountain and enchanted atmosphere sometimes compels one to think that these myths are true and real.
    Balakot/ Dawanr:

The valley of Mankial has a T shaped location. Towards the western end, above the main road, the villages of Balakot and Dawanr are located face to face the towering summits of Mankial. The dominant language in the area is Kohistani but Pashto is widely spoken and understood. The people of Balakot rely mostly on farming and some of them are employed in foreign countries. The cash crops are maize, peas, potato, turnips and cabbages. Natural and pure mountain honey is also one of the products of these exotic vales, which has high demand in the national and local market and is mostly used as a base in herbaceous medicines. Telephone and electricity have been provided to these villages and some daily consumable items can also be procured in the small shops scattered in the valley.
    Badai:

The valley of Mankial is two pronged with the population scattered on both sides of River Swat. A wooden bridge connects the left segment of Mankial valley with the main road from where an unconstructed link road leads towards the mesmerizing and beautiful valleys and pastures of Jaba (Marshes), Badai, Serai and Chokkail Banda. This link road plies side by side with the roaring, thudding and foaming stream of Mankial, which empties down to River Swat in the central Mankial Valley. The condition of the road is miserable and only four wheelers can tackle the bumpy and sturdy ride of the treacherous and tricky bends and turns. The maximum time to reach Badai where the road is forked, one leading to Jaba and the other to Serai, is forty to fifty minutes. Badai is famous for the mausoleum of Badai Baba where several people go in search of spiritual solace and cure for mysterious diseases. Badai is the only village where the houses are closely located with some shops catering for daily consumable items.
    Jabai

The road turning to right hand leads to the beautiful and exotic highland of Jaba where the local people of Mankial reside in summers, growing potatoes and raising livestock. The slightly open valley of Jaba is wearing a thick blanket of cedar or deodar forest decorated by the mosaic of colorful wild flowers and fruits during early spring. The valley is guarded by the sky touching peaks of mount Mankial in the east where huge glaciers melt down and form spectacular waterfalls and cataracts, which cool the eyes of the beholder and reverberate in the valley, like the enchanting music of mermaids in myths.

Several other pastures and grass lands situated at a relatively high altitude from Jaba including the misty pastures of Boksar and Sor Kar can be easily accessed from this area. The sprawling meadows of Boksar are incomparable in beauty and are identical with the splendid highlands of Dewsai in Gilgit. These hypnotizing valleys are famous for its rich wild life in which Snow Leopard, Markhor, Black Bear, Flying Squirrel, golden Monal, Koklas Pheasant and the bulky Snow Cock are some well-known names. Jaba has several potentials of eco-tourism, which can be beneficial for the community particularly, and the country generally. A strong initiative from the department with support from the local community will certainly make the area prosperous and will help to conserve the ecosystem.
    Serai

The road turning to left hand in Badai comes to a halt in the splendid valley of Serai. The valley is hubbub of activities in summer but in winter the valley is deserted due to severe snowfall and avalanches. Serai is a wide valley with ample land for potato, peas and turnip cultivation and the people of Mankial exploit the land diligently. The cold and freezing springs and streams in the valley form a web that provide drinking and irrigation water. Most of the houses in the valley are constructed with wood, mud, and stones but still modern architecture can be observed in the valley. A huge mosque constructed with durable cedar wood is a special feature of the valley where collective prayers are performed during summer.
    Chokail Banda:

Chokail Banda (Valley) is located in the north of Serai valley. An ascending trail leads to this picturesque summer pasture and highland from Serai, which takes three to four hours to reach this sparkling jewel of nature. The towering peaks of mount Mankial in the south looks like mighty Titans who are always vigilant and ready to guard the valley.
Chokail is also famous for the endangered Markhor and elusive Snow Leopard. Wolf, Black Bear, Golden Monal and the bulky Snow Cock are the regular features of Chokail. The area has also been declared as a National Park by the government and the diverse fauna and flora has been given a status of national heritage. Poaching and hunting is strictly prohibited in the valley but poachers still manage to thwart the initiatives of the conservation department. The eye cooling glaciers, the fresh and misty breeze, the elusive calls of birds and the sky touching mountains are some of the exquisite and special features, which make Mankial valley different, beautiful, and a radiant gem in the enchanting valley of Swat

    Chail Valley

The maximum time to reach this picturesque valley from Madyan is fifteen minutes in a vehicle and thirty minutes by feet. The valley is divided in to two segments; old Chail and new Chail. The village situated beside the stream is called new Chail while the scattered houses in the mountainous terrain above the stream is called old Chail. Both these villages are located on the left side connected by a bridge with the main road. The new Chail is approachable through vehicle but to reach old Chail a person must walk at least for fifteen minutes from new Chail.
    The People

The population of both these areas is about 2000 according 1998 census. Most of the locals are bilingual speaking both Pashto and Kohistani but the dominant language spoken in the villages is Kohistani. Most of the younger generation are leaned towards modern education and are studying in the local or outstation schools. The occupation of the local community is farming, business, timber and employment in foreign countries. The local has also established some fishing hatcheries in the area, which not only provide employment opportunity but has also created a sense of professionalism. Most of the modern facilities are available in the locality and the people are well versed with modern needs and requirements.
    Culture

There was a time when the people of the area were living a secluded life and were considered uncultured and brutish. Some famous tales are associated with their ignorance and barbarian culture they strictly adhered to in the past. One such famous tale is about the abandoning or discarding of the old and infirm people of the community. There is a place, which is called Martallo in the local vernacular in Chail. It is a huge canyon above the stream with dense vegetation, from which the ancient inhabitants of the area would roll down the aged people with a straw basket full of maize bread to sustain the person for a few days below in the deep gorge. It used to be quite a ceremony and the notable of the community would gather and ceremoniously see off the aged person. The person was abandoned this way and was never inquired about again. Most of the ill fated died instantly after they were pushed from the steep height of the cliff. Wild animals and birds often devoured the corpse. One point which baffles and compel one to think about the extreme ignorance of the people of that time is that when a human being is thrown down from such immense height, how can he survive the fall and feed on the basket of bread thrown with him. Today it is just a story, which the people do not like to listen and recall again. The generation of today is modern, educated and well aware of the values and requirements of modern civilization

      Shanku and Bashigram Valleys:

Both the valleys of Shanku and Bashigram are located near to each other. Shanku is situated on the right side of the stream above the road. Most of the house are built on the mountain terrain and are scattered far and wide. The maximum to reach this charming valley from Madyan is thirty minutes in a vehicle. The area is provided with all basic facilities of telephone and electricity. There is a small market place where every thing of daily use can be easily procured. Most of the people are involved in farming but the new generation is evolving and is taking interest in education and modern professions. The population of the area is exceeding 1500 according to 1998 census. The surrounding mountains are covered with dense forests and foliage, which provides ideal habitat for several species of wild animals and birds. Kohistani is the major language spoken in the area but everyone understands Pashto.

      Bashigram Valley

The sprawling valley of Bashigram is the last village on the road. The houses are built like gigantic steps on the uneven landscape of the mountain. The total time to reach the valley from Madyan is forty minutes as the road is not in good condition. Several other small hamlets surround the valley, which can be approached by trekking for an hour or a half. The track to Bashigram Lake starts from this village and that’s how it has taken its name. Lush green forests surround the valley, which receives heavy snowfall. Several springs and streams scattered throughout the valley. Electricity and telephone facilities are available in the valley.

      The People

The area is no more secluded and the people visit the nearby town of Madyan almost on daily basis to merchandise their goods and buy the daily consumable items. The communication gape that once isolated these areas no more exists. The population of the area including all surrounding villages exceeds 2000 and the area has formidable vote bank. Less than twenty percent of the people are educated but the trend is changing slowly and the new generation is diverting to literacy. Most of the inhabitants live permanently here while the adjoining hamlets are deserted during winter and are occupied in the summer again.

      Culture

The people are very hospitable and welcome everyone in their beautiful locale. Most of the people rely on farming and grow maize and off-season peas, which pick them lucrative prices in the market. The people speak both Pashto and Kohistani languages but the latter is the dominant language in the area. Their dialects are different. The people are very traditional and some old customs related with matrimony are still followed there. Some small shops in the area provide the daily consumable items. Due to harsh and hard surrounding and life, the people are physically rough and tough, and their complexions sunburned as the area is situated at a fairly altitude from sea level. The beauty of the valley and hospitality of the people are some of the wonderful memories, which the visitors take back with them after visiting the rustic and pastoral locale of Bashigram.

A Reflective Picture of Madyan Valley

Valley Swat is a unique, beautiful and glittering jewel created by Almighty that is an exact replica of the glorious Alps in Switzerland. Like the Alps several mighty and high mountain ranges surround this expansive and enthralling valley. It is certainly a paradise for nature lovers where they can feast their eyes on the diverse bounties of nature ranging from the densely forested mountains to the snaking rivers and torrents. National and international tourists chose Madyan for their stay as all other beautiful sites and valleys can be easily accessed from this central valley. The innumerable hill resorts in the valley also include Madyan and the green valleys of Chail and Bashigram, which are situated towards the east of Madyan.

The valley of Madyan is situated about 56 kilometers in the north of Mingawara (Mingora) city. It lies on the main road that leads to Behrain, Kalam and other beautiful valleys of Swat. The main road is in a dilapidated condition that manifests the inefficiency of highway authorities.

The slightly wide valley of Madyan is different in comparison to other valleys in the sense that almost every type of modern facility and amenity is available here i.e. internet, cellular networks, cable and satellite TV, hotels, restaurants and other basic necessities of life in its marketplace.

Apart from these up to-date facilities, tall mountains covered with green foliage and dotted with small mud and concrete houses from three sides surround the beautiful town of Madyan. The roaring and foaming river Swat looks like a ferocious monster here as the huge mountains on both sides fetter it and restrain its movement compared to the lower plains of Swat where the river has occupied a wide area.
The surrounding valleys especially the lush green valley of Chail, Shanku and Bashigram produce formidable quantity of delicious mushrooms, herbaceous plants, fruits and timber. The main stream that flows from the snow-covered mountains in the east of this valley provide most of the drinking and irrigation water.

The river and streams are teeming with Swati fish and the succulent trout, the precious and delicious gifts of nature. Several private and public hatcheries of trout fish are the unique features of Madyan valley. In the cold and clear water of the valley, the trout fish nourishes and flourishes by leaps and bounds and both the private and public sector collects huge revenue.

Most of the trees that cover the landscape bear fruits of numerous colours and tastes. Wild fig, berries, persimmon, olive, oak, wild pear and citric fruits proliferate in the valley and can be found everywhere. Apple, plum, apricot, peach and pear orchards are spread all over the valley. Maize, wheat, onions, potatoes, and beans are the major produce of the agriculture land in the valley.

The tall, dark green forests of conifer and pine that adored most of the surrounding mountains have fallen prey to the local and intruding timber Mafia. Until and unless the local community does not shed their oblivious sleep, the beautiful Madyan and its adjoining valleys will become fragments of history and will be remembered only in pictures and memories.
The valleys of Chail, Shanku and Bashigram

Several fascinating and beautiful valleys e.g. Chail, Shanku and Bashigram surround the central merchandise valley of Madyan. These small valleys are located towards the eastern end of Madyan in the lush green mountains beside the main stream that flows from the snowy mountains of Bashigram and mingles with River Swat at Madyan. The road that leads to these fabulous valleys are partly constructed and can be plied by any type of vehicle but four wheelers are the most roadworthy vehicles. The road moves side by side with the stream with abundance fruitful vegetation all-round.

          Pari/Khapiro (Fairy) Lake Swat

          Pari/Khapiro (Fairy) Lake 1
Pari Lake is one of the lakes in Swat region which is located at a very high altitude in the foot of the tallest peak in the range with a considerable depth. The name Pari or Khapiro is given to the lake due to the widespread belief that the lake is the abode of fairies where they live and bathe in the cool, pure and clear water of the lake. It is located to North-east of Utror valley and can be accessed only by trekking. Trekking to the lake needs endurance and love for nature as the trail is exasperating as well as dangerous therefore, utmost care should be taken while trekking on the narrow bends and turns leading to the lake. The lake is accessible from both Izmis and Kundal lakes. Two ascending tracks lead to this lake from Kundal and Izmis lakes taking almost five hours to reach this roof top of Swat. The trail is very steep from both sides but the surrounding beauty and eye-cooling green pastures and exotic flowers not only boost the trekker’s stamina but compel him to explore further.

The lake is surrounded by sharp jagged rocks and peaks with scanty grass and flowers growth. Pari Lake I is a small lake which feeds the greater Pari Lake located below it. The lake is triangular in shape and is surrounded by tall mountains with western face opening to the greater Pari Lake. Several white gushing waterfalls from the surrounding peaks and glaciers feed the lake with crystal clear water.

The lake remains submerged in glaciers almost all-round the year except in the months of August and September. Pari Lake I is important only in the context that it is the major source of water for the greater Pari Lake. The emerald green water of the lake, the green highlands, the sky-touching mountains and the serene environment around has extraordinary potentials for eco- tourism which can play a vital role in the development and conservation of the lake and the area.

          Pari/Khapiro (Fairy) Lake 2
Pari Lake II is located at the highest altitude in the mountain ranges of Swat near Pari Lake I. It is comparatively greater in size and depth than the other lake situated in its vicinity and remains open in the months of July till September. The western face of the lake is open and its water flows down to the gigantic Kundal Lake which is situated in the foothills down. The towering mountains surrounding the lake are a safe haven for the bulky Snow-cock and brightly coloured Monal pheasants. These birds can be heard and seen during the early hours of dawn here. Due to the limited space around the lake and freezing weather, the Grazers have not erected any construction around the lake and rely on the surrounding natural caves for staying. Therefore a tent must be taken if someone wants to stay for a night there. Due to the awesome height of the lake, no fire-wood can be found nearby therefore, gas cylinder must be on the top of priority list.

The lake is almost quarter a kilometer in length and is surrounded by steep pastures where the grazers take their livestock in the hot months of summer when fodder is scarce in the plains. Due to its alarming height and uncertain weather, the lake remains undisturbed in comparison to Kundal Lake which is easily accessible and is visited by several tourists in summer. Pari Lake II has a twofold importance; it provides a huge share of water to Kundal Lake and is a safe feeding ground for the indigenous as well as migratory birds. The lake has a strong potential for eco-tourism which will not only help conserve the lake but also create a new source of income for the local community. Construction of proper trekking trail, provision of essential trekking equipments and camping sites can boost eco-tourism here which will certainly increase the sustainability prospects of the lake. Pari or Fairy Lake II is a place worth visiting not only due to its ecological importance but the immense natural recreational potential the lake posses. The unadulterated and serene environment around the lake is an amenity and the picturesque beauty all-around keep the visitor in a state of frenzy all the time during the stay near the lake. The wide horizon, spectacular panoramas, haunting silence and cool breeze are some of the priceless gifts which a nature lover can find here in abundance.
