they are colleges and community colleges all over, so they choose the closest ones. If they make it to medical school then they could go to a dorm.

I don't know if men and women are separate I have only been to community college.

Yeah, your put in a room with your own gender, but there's no rules against bringing girls or boys into your dorm, well in the university's near me there isn't
