" Students protest killing of colleague by police " >>> Dawn today. >
Students of a Post Graduate College, Mardan held a demonstration
to protest against the killing and injuring of their colleagues by the
Sawaldher police on Thursday. A student, Attaullah was killed and
his two classmates received critical bullet injuries when police allegedly
fired on their motorcyle alleging they had ignored the police signal to stop.
I know a wee bit about police working and I can say with confidence that
there is no country in the world where the police have powers to open fire
purely in response to their signals to stop have been ignored [may be not seen.]
Taking some young student's life is something to be mourned by history. There
are,of course, countries in this world where life comes very cheap and it can
therfore be disposed off as cheaply. Begram is on the top of those cities. I am
afraid nobody is going to give any allowance to the police for their nerves made
absolutely raw by the manner in which they have been repeatedly subjected to
mortal treatment in an unparrelled barbaric manner. But Police is Police---It has
to work in a special way in special and unique circumstances. The Inspectors General
of this Force, a force which has to function as the country's first line of defence and
hand over to the Army when powers that be so decide, have to put their heads together
and find ways and means to retrieve the image which any police force anywhere in the
world would hanker to win.
