  • Calling animals 'pets' is insulting, academics claim

Animal lovers should stop calling their furry or feathered friends “pets” because the term is insulting, leading academics claim.

Domestic dogs, cats, hamsters or budgerigars should be rebranded as “companion animals” while owners should be known as “human carers”, they insist.

Even terms such as wildlife are dismissed as insulting to the animals concerned – who should instead be known as “free-living”, the academics including an Oxford professor suggest.

The call comes from the editors of then Journal of Animal Ethics, a new academic publication devoted to the issue.

It is edited by the Revd Professor Andrew Linzey, a theologian and director of the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics, who once received an honorary degree from the Archbishop of Canterbury for his work promoting the rights of “God’s sentient creatures”.

In its first editorial, the journal – jointly published by Prof Linzey’s centre and the University of Illinois in the US – condemns the use of terms such as ”critters” and “beasts”.

I love animals and believe that we should treat all life with respect, but does someone get the feeling that priorities are sometimes a *little* misplaced??

It's called being totally wazgaar (laka chi wass yam ).

i always call my animal companions by their name. my frog is 'lucy' (the intellectual)
the wasp in my letterbox is 'buzz' and my dog, who died, was named 'slouch'. (he may have reincarnated as 'lucy'). because i don't know the names of the free living animals in the neighbourhood, i just say, 'hi there mate'

these academics have a lot of time on their hands.
There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.

I can never trust an animal. I would never keep one, unless it was completely harmless. Like a goldfish

There are many stories of foolish white people letting their pet dogs hang around their families, unrestrained.

Next thing you know little Johnny is missing half his face, cuz he poked the dog.
