watanjar means de watan na jar.
which in english literely means land poison.
but it actually means land scrifice which means one who sacrifice for watan(homeland)
so watanjar is not name of a place
its actually this guy's surname

Oh!
Thanks, both of you --
It WOULD be an interesting project to find out where all those other Communist
generals and political figureheads who are still around on the planet
stand on this topic.
I remember one clip by one of them showing him speaking out against the invasion.
On the other hand, these people also had knee-jerk reactions to anything to do with America, as they were trained and/or indoctrinated by Soviet Communists
and perhaps Iranian ones too?
So they would naturally be against the NATO attack from that perspective.
That type may welcome a return of Russian forces after the Americans leave...
Wonder if some of these Afghan Communist Party members have
reformed ?
If some have become Islamic in their values -- maybe even practising their religion too?

I remember one clip by one of them showing him speaking out against the invasion.that was shahnawaz tanai and he was responsible for the coup against najib government and he isnt a communist but a nationalist.

nationlists normaly would be against foreign invasion but cant say the same for communists.
So they would naturally be against the NATO attack from that perspective.
That type may welcome a return of Russian forces after the Americans leave...dont think so
Wonder if some of these Afghan Communist Party members have
reformed ? i havent heard of eactly afghans saying they are communists but there always been two factions, one was nationalists and other was communists.there could be many nationalists in the Afghan resistance.
If some have become Islamic in their values -- maybe even practising their religion too?
i for one have lived in Afghanistan in those times and believe me we had Quran lessons at the schools so i dont think you would have find Afghans being athesit communists.btw i lived in the time right when the soviets were leaving.

Really helpful, GYE, to try to understand.
I always remember that name Shahnawaz Tanai.
That Pashtun - wasn't he from somewhere in the East of Afghanistan, is there a Tanai tribe or something like that ? - was in the Communist regime, but he was actually a nationalist? Oh, OK.
That clip was quite interesting to see his feelings in this era.
He WAS a big name.
So you're saying that Islamic instruction still went on during the Soviet occupation?
Or was it resuming when you were at that age ?
Like maybe a bit dormant before in the earlier part of the 80s?
I know for sure that Soviets and KGB had infiltrated some of the mosques
and tried to co-opt clergy to give the Communist govt's line.
How widespread that programme was and how successful is a question
I am curious about, as I wrote on this topic.
But no way did I have a full knowledge of the situation without being free to travel around Afghanistan and speak to many people.
I asked new refugees to Pakistan, among them govt officials who had 'defected' or fled, to piece together the situation for my article on this.
