          Re: Nowroz

It's not a Pashtun thing, it's Persian, but I guess other Afghanistani's join in with the celebration.

            Re: Nowroz

^ yeah, i mean the pashtuns here still celebrate it. There is a Pakitawal family that has a hall, and they throw a party....but yeah it is an Afghan thing, other countries celebrate Nowroz like Iran and the Central Asian countries. I guess the Pashtuns living in Pakistan do not celebrate it, at least from what i know.

              Re: Nowroz

^^ It's to mark the Persian new year.

Yeah it's basically unknown to Pashtuns living in Pak and I personally don't know any pashtuns who celebrate it.

I wonder about the Islamic perspective on it..

And Afridi wror, she meant no harm, I'm sure others will talk about New Years and what not.

                  @ James

oh i think you are new, well then, welcome. And i am guessing from your name, you are not Pashtun.....well thats okay, we can hear different perspectives and maybe you can learn too about Pashtun culture :D

anyways, Nowroz in Afghanistan is the New Years. And yes it does come from Persian/Iran, but Afghans also celebrate it. During Nowroz, there are plenty of picnics, concerts, attan (traditional) dance, and many more. It is usually around March 21st. Its the start of Spring.

here is the link to the history of it

                  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nowruz

If you have any questions about like the customs and stuff you can pm me......

                  @ Afridi

ha ha me spreading Iran influence? okay whatever. If YOU do not want to hear it, fine by me because i did not make this thread to please you.

And in case if you did not notice it, Afghanistan celebrates it. Go there and you will see what i mean.

And yes, from what i can see now, Pashtuns living in Pakistan do not celebrate it.

                      Re: Nowroz

Nope, don't celebrate it. I was under the impression it is a custom from another religion or has deep roots there...
I desire that which is Just - House of Dukemina.

I am orginally from Afghanistan and we do not celebrate such a thing. Nowruz is unheard of amongst Pashtun of Afghan south as well.

                          Re: Nowroz

Wow, this is news to me. Afghanistan celebrates Nowroz like crazy.....Back in the day, dont know how they continue doing it, but in Kabul the city would be filled with people from different provinces. The city would set up tents for families and bazaars. They would sell everything. All the families would get together and stay close together. Attan was/is greatly done. They would have many different performers and shows. Then families would get together and visit one another. Usually this time, schools and work was on hold. Even now, there are concerts of Ustad Mangal going on for Nowroz.

And here in California, we have endless picnics and shows. I hope that clears up some of the confusion

                            Re: Nowroz

^If you do not mind me asking ,Are you Pashtun? Nowruz is alien to Pashtun culture but Afghan and Pakistani.

Kabul PROVINCE is 60-70% percent Pashtun, but Kabul city itself is tajik majority, so I hope that clears up some confusion.

Yes i am Pashtun :D It is alien to Pashtun culture because it comes from Persian culture. But it is celebrated in Afghanistan. I mean its been celebrated for a long time, i did not come up with the idea to celebrate the first day of spring. What part of Afghanistan are you from if you do not mind me asking? I am from Laghman province which is not far from Kabul. And yes i know the stats on the ethnicity of Kabul.

btw, my father went to back to Afghanistan about 5 years ago, and its really celebrated there....
