  • Indian man has 39 wives, nearly 100 children

GUWAHATI, India (Reuters) – The more, the merrier is certainly true for Ziona Chana, a 66-year-old man in India's remote northeast who has 39 wives, 94 children and 33 grandchildren -- and wouldn't mind having more.
They all live in a four storied building with 100 rooms in a mountainous village in Mizoram state, sharing borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh, media reports said.
"I once married 10 women in one year," he was quoted as saying.
His wives share a dormitory near Ziona's private bedroom and locals said he likes to have seven or eight of them by his side at all times.
The sons and their wives, and all their children, live in different rooms in the same building, but share a common kitchen.
The wives take turns cooking, while his daughters clean the house and do washing. The men do outdoor jobs like farming and taking care of livestock.
The family, all 167 of them, consumes around 91 kg (200 pounds) of rice and more than 59 kg (130 pounds) of potatoes a day. They are supported by their own resources and occasional donations from followers.
"Even today, I am ready to expand my family and willing to go to any extent to marry," Ziona said.
"I have so many people to care (for) and look after, and I consider myself a lucky man."
Ziona met his oldest wife, who is three years older than he is, when he was 17.
He heads a local Christian religious sect, called the "Chana," which allows polygamy. Formed in June 1942, the sect believes it will soon be ruling the world with Christ and has a membership of around 400 families.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

you guys are all asking stupid questions!

it is India we are talking about (which is very similar case in pakistan)

people don't pay for their wives... their wives pay them for marrying them. Imagine this guy got 39 different dowries from 39 different families...

and about the eating part... common!... one chapati with half a plate of sabzi, tarkari is enough for one person...Indians have very limited apetite.

now if this guy had 39 afghan wives with 94 children and grandchildren, then you would have to ask how the hell could he afford all these marriages and how can he feed them?

who said Indians don't eat.may be you must have watched have all those slum dog videos :P and food varies from different parts in india.and married indian people are one of the fattest i have seen especially punjabi women

coming to topic having more than one wife is illegal in india.have seen many of them suffering Polygamy case.only exception are for muslims and for old people who were already married before the law was introduced.plus this guy comes from mizoram they are mostly tribal mongoloid people.also he must be dam rich some kind of land lord

if you know about bollywood actor dharmendra from sholay we wanted to marry her costar hema malini. problem was he was already married and his wife refused to divorce him,so he and hema malini changed their religion to muslim to get leaglly married.

^most of my friends are panjabi... and no they don't eat even close to Afghans... i don't know why they get fat after marriage... it must be the way the food is prepared... i.e. access oil and ghee... but the portions are much much smaller than afghans... i have attended about 4 indian weddings, two panjabi, one gujrati, one malyali... they make as much food for the entire wedding of 200 people as we afghans make to feed 30 to 40 afghan men at a small gathering.

and eating less is not something negative... i find it quite the contrary. eating less is a good habit... it is encouraged by our religion!
