Briefly, long before the creation of Adam a.s everybodys soul was in a place called "alama urwah" we all made a promise there that we will never forget Allah etc.. we are formed in our mothers womb without a soul until we are developed to a certain extent then our soul from Alama Urwah is breathed into us.

Once born the body encompasses of two entitys, the Jassad (body) and Ruh (soul)..these make up a complete human, they are both important and are vital. both have roles in life and both need to be fed and sustained, the soul is sustained by being spiritual and by the rememberance of Allah and is fed by doing good deeds, the same way the body is sustained by eating, exercise and such. without a normal body the soul can still transform the being into being happy.. the soul is the reason why you get billionares commiting suicide as they have only concentrated on the fulfilment of there body desires and starved the soul to a point were its dead.

Allah says in Surah Isra: And they ask you (O Muhammad) concerning the rooh. Say: The rooh is one of the things, the knowledge of which is only with my Lord. And of knowledge, you (mankind) have been given only a little. And the shaan-e-nuzool of this Ayah has been discussed in Sahih Hadeeths. This does not mean that we should not discuss its existence or interpret the Ayahs and Hadeeths to our advantage. Rather, like we have been told in Surah Kahf to not debate about that which we are unaware of (the number of the people of the Cave), similarly, the command here is the same. There is no harm in explaining and interpreting the Ayaat in which this term has been revealed or understanding the context in which it has been revealed (and clarified in Ahadeeth).

The Arabic word ruh literally means soul or spirit and its plural is arwah. The term has appeared in over twelve places in the Quran and has been described using various verbs and adjectives such as taking (in death and sleep), a grasping soul, a shrouded soul and the like. A Muslim believes in these attributes and knows that the soul is not like the body. It is something that, like everything else, has been created by Allah. And knowledge of its essence lies exclusively with Allah.

This topic brings back old memories of a life changing moment for me, while still a teenager. I watched a film version of the life of Francis of Assisi, and in his conversion scene he said these words:

"My soul is in your hands…..I am someone seeking the light, someone in darkness. I was in darkness but Brother sun illuminated my soul. And now I can see so clearly.

              “What do you want?”

“I want to be happy. I want to live like the birds in the sky. I want to experience the purity and the freedom that they experience; the rest is no use to me. No use, believe me. If the purpose of life is this loveless toil we fill our days with, then its not for me. There must be something better, there has to be! Man is a spirit, he has a soul and that is what I want to recapture, my soul.

I want to live in the fields, stride over hills, climb trees swim rivers, I want o feel the firm grasp of the earth beneath my feet, without shoes without possessions...."

Then a friend came to him and said later in another scene:

"This emptiness, this dissatisfaction I feel, the horror of wars the destruction of our ideals is part of it I know, but there ‘s something else. I feel stifled by my upbringing, none of it means anything to me any more, and you know I cannot live without an ideal without something to believe in."

It made one of the deepest impressions on my Spiritual Journey, this knowing that there is more to life than what we see on the outside.

              Just my opinions.......
