Salamoona,
As I read news reports about some soldiers raping my Afghan sisters in my country, as I hear reports about civilians being massacred, as I see videos of children shot, held hostage, suffering and starving, I ask myself: Have we truly become numb?
Those of us who are 30 and younger have yet to lay an eye on an Afghanistan that is not war torn, that is not on fire, that is not falling apart.
Those of us who are 30 and younger have yet to see a single day of peace in Afghanistan. Is that why we have become numb?
If today, in this very country we reside in, an Afghan had sexual intercourse with a native woman and that woman later on claimed that she did not give her consent and that he raped her - wallahi all hell would break loose, it would be all over the news, the papers, the bookstores, YouTube, FaceBook, the campuses, the streets - everywhere!
If I, as a Muslim were to kill a civilian, people would go apesh*t, I'd be sentenced to death, prejudice against Muslims would multiply exponentially my family would be killed, etc. etc.
However, people in our country - people who have been there for over a decade to bring peace, justice and safety! - rape and kill civilians on a daily basis. Yes, it's a state of war I understand, however this isn't Congo were rape is viewed as a legitimate form of punishment and murder, raping and harming of civilians is not permissible under any kind of international law, I'm sure. Have we truly become so numb that an article about X civilians killed doesn't affect us anymore? Have we truly become so numb to injustice that a report about an Afghan girl raped by a soldier doesn't touch our hearts anymore? Have we truly become so numb that we change the channel when we see the children of Kabul and Kandahar walk on snow without any shoes on? Have we truly become so numb that a widows tears don't reach our heart anymore? Have we truly become so deaf that we don't hear orphans cry anymore? Have we truly become so damn oblivious to injustice?
This isn't about one article, this isn't about one video, one news report or one rape. Our country is on fire, and while they used Afghanistan as a playground to fight their war with Russia during the Soviet Invasion, they today are in Afghanistan, bringing what?
Peace? Why then are the windows of my newlywed cousin's house shattered by bombs?
Justice? Why then does Afghan blood have to be shed for foreign purposes?
Safety? Why then are the women of Afghanistan raped?
Perspective? Why then are insurgents tolerated?
No matter what ideologies you believe in, open your eyes. Open them to good and bad, to right and wrong. Open them to morals. Don't let people walk all over you and then blame you for not standing up for your beliefs. Stand up, speak up, do something - I beg you - change what you disapprove of.
Let me end with a few words from the glorious Malcom X:

"I have no mercy or compassion in me for a society that will crush people, and then penalize them for not being able to stand up under the weight."
