  • Manners

It is said that it was asked of this great sage Luqman, the wise, how he acquired his manners; and, legend has it that his replied was: From the ill-mannered.

    -----

We as Muslims are required, as per Islamic teachings, to have exemplary manners. That said, how can we use the wise Luqman's method? In other words, what does this great sage mean when he said that he acquired his manners from the ill-mannered?

His stories were a part of my upbringing and childhood. A wise man to say the least. When one desires to learn something, they don't need to sit on the same flooring as a teacher or scholar, and so many people pick up qualities, faults and mannerisms simply by observing. Luqman ('alayhis salaam) did the same thing. Where he saw a fault, he avoided it, and made sure it wasn't a characteristic he adopted, for he saw the impact it had on others and the image it gave off of the person himself. He also took into consideration his impression of those situations and desired better in his own case. I came across this quote not along ago myself, and since, it has echoed in my ears for quite some time.

we muslims . . . are we exemplary? really exemplary, it means every action is an example of a muslim!!!!
No, we are not, because we are feeble weak human = make mistakes, errors, do wrong, as well as good.

what is wrong with us is that we say we muslims are better, we are the good, etc etc, we forget that it is our actions that tell others if we are good. look at the actions of muslims round the world. any better then other people?
this argumet of claiming we are better, to me it is like jews saying that they are the chosen people.

if there are any doubts in life, read the quran with meanings from differnet sources and translations.

I think you missed the point, brother.

We as Muslim claim to follow the most complete teaching, if this is true, then we should be exemplary. We should walk the talk.

There is no such mention in the Quran, nor in Ahadeeth. Undoubtedly, he was favoured by Allah with wisdom, knowledge and understanding, however, I have always believed that Allah withheld prophethood from him.

            What is your belief?

perhaps i missed the point ashiq . . . luqman's method is perhaps learning from other's mistakes, or not doing the things the ill-mannered do.

It is interesting that Allah does not mention him to be a prophet, yet a whole chapter is named after him.

I have my reasons why I think he was a prophet, and I will share my thoughts with you shortly.

I am just a bit busy, right now.
