Assalamu Alaikum,
Among the rights that Muslims have over one another is that they should greet each other with salaam. This means that when one sees or sees off someone one should say salaam, and the recipient has to also reply by saying salaam.
That said, a person walking into a gather should always extend salaam first, and a person leaving a gathering should always say salaam first. The reason for this is because a smaller group should always extend the greeting to a larger group, and the reply of one person from among the larger group suffices on behalf of the whole group.
Salaam should even be extended in case of a situation where there is a separation for an instantaneous moment. It is related that when the companions (may Allah be pleased with them) of the Prophet of Allah (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would get separated by a tree in their path, while walking, they would greet each other with a fresh salaam upon re-joining after the momentary seperation.
Hence, I believe that we should treat these fora with the same philosophy.
Therefore, when we sign-in we should come here, to this thread, and say salaam, and if there is someone online they should reply to the salaam, and if there isn't then the Angels would reply salaam. Also, when we sign-off we should come here and say salaam, and if there is someone online they should reply to the salaam, and if there isn't then the Angels would reply salaam. We should do this even if we sign off for a moment.
There are many benefits and lessons that one can learn from this simply Islamic teaching. We can discuss them here on this thread if we wish.
