Application of line (an element of Art) in Apparel design

    1) Horizontal effects are charming on a slender, well-proportioned person but would make a large women look very broad and short. The women figures above are of same height, but the vertical directions of the lines in the dress B, make the woman appear taller & more slender. The horizontal movement in A, decreases the apparent height and adds width to the figure. It is amazing to see the transformation that can be brought about through illusion created by an intelligent use of lines.

    2) A tall thin person should choose dominant lines that carry the eye across the figure, because horizontal and curved lines add width. The tall, thin man should choose the nearest approach to broad padded shoulders, coats with deep yokes and fullness belted at the waistline; the wider and fuller trousers; light coat with dark trousers etc.

    3) Women who wish to look shorter should select horizontal lines. This may be gained from suits with contrasting jackets, dresses with contrasting blouse or bodice tops, shorter, wider skirts and flared tunics, broad belts, broadened shoulders. They should select hair style that is broad (blunt cut/step cut) than following the head too closely (boy cut/crew cut).

    4) All of these lines that look so well on the too tall, too slender person should be avoided by those who are short or stout. This group should avoid a horizontal movement in the lines of hats and garments. They should seek to direct the eye up and down the center of the figure, rather than across it.

My sister majored in Fashion Design. She even tailored, made a winter coat for me once. A friend of mine in Europe was an Art history major...now I think of both of them......

rihana, Swat, amna, you are welcome..i am happy that u all liked it very much......i hope and wish that u apply this to while choosing apparel....

what we usually forget is that our personality is of primary and based on our personality we should choose our apparel.... something that will enhance our personality and good features and not mar them....and also choose something that will emphasize our bad features and camouflage our good features......

we get so carried away by what we see in the market that we end up buying things that we like the most and not paying attention to whether its going to suit us or not....

Zayam.....u are thinking of your sisters....we canttake their place but we are here for u always.....

Afghanlady and Samima i am into Art and Design as my majors has been Interior Design....but there are some aspects of design which once we know e can apply in all area like interiors, exteriors, apparel, jewelry, landacpe, accessories, even your projects, power point presentation and many many more areas....

i dont know how far its true that men need less help....example is atmyhome....my brother before planning to wear something he opens his wardrobe and shows me different combinations,,,, and usually he goes for what i pick for him.....
