Exposure of woman’s beauty before non-Mahram men is prohibited as proved by the Quran, sunnah (tradition) and consensus of the Muslim scholars. The whole body of the woman is 'Awrah (part of the body that must not be exposed) and none but her Mahrams (non-marriageable men) are allowed to see any part of her body, hair, jewelry or underclothes.

What most women today do by exposing their beauty, adornment and jewelry in the streets, is in fact committing sins openly, imitating the disbelieving women, and arousing Fitnah (trial).

The woman who leaves her house uncovering her head, neck, arms or legs, commits a major violation of the rules of the pure Sharee‘ah (Islamic legislation).

This also applies to going out wearing clothes that expose the woman’s beauty or transparent clothes that do not cover her body, because all this falls under the prohibited exposure of beauty.

One of the gravest sins and most harmful temptation is what most women do today by going out exposing their beauty and adornment and wearing perfume and intermixing with men -- an act that incurs the wrath and punishment of Allaah The Exalted.

Proofs of the prohibition of the exposure of woman’s beauty:

The main two sources of legislation in Islam, the Quran and the Sunnah, forbid the woman’s exposure of her beauty and warn the woman who does this of a severe punishment because of the evil consequences that result from this attitude:

1-Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {And abide in your houses and do not display yourselves as [was] the display of the former times of ignorance.} [Quran 33:33] i.e., stay in your houses and never go out without a necessity because this is safer for you.

The Prophet saww , said: "The woman is ‘Awrah (i.e. should not be exposed). If she goes out of her house, the devil looks at her and beautifies her in the eyes of men.”[Al-Bazzaar and At-Tirmithi]

We notice that the previous verse addresses the wives of the Prophet saww, in particular, and all the Muslim women in general. That is because the wives of the Prophet saww are the Mothers of the Believers and the role model for all Muslim women everywhere and at all times.

This is proved by the fact that there are other general rulings that preceded and followed this verse, such as ‎the prohibition of softness in speech and the display of adornment and beauty, like the former times of ignorance, in addition to the obligation of speaking in an appropriate way, observing prayers, paying Zakaah*(purifying alms) and obeying Allaah The Almighty and His Messenger saww All these are general rulings that apply equally to the wives of the Prophet saww as well as other women.

          Al-Qurtubi said,

"This verse implies a command for the wives of the Prophet saww to abide in their houses. This command applies to all Muslim women even if it was the only proof in this regard; nevertheless, there are countless commands and evidence proving that the Muslim woman should abide in her house and refrain from leaving it without a necessity.

Sawdah bint Zam‘ah the wife of the Prophet saww was asked, “Why do you not perform Hajj and ‘Umrah like your sisters (other wives of the Prophet saww )?” She answered, “I have already performed Hajj and ‘Umrah and Allaah The Almighty Commanded me to abide in my house.” The narrator said, “By Allaah, she did not leave her house until she died.”

Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {Do not display yourselves as [was] the display of the* former times of ignorance‎}i.e., do not leave your houses frequently to show your adornment and beauty like the women during the former times of ignorance (pre-Islamic era) who were void of knowledge and religion.

2-Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {And not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof}[Quran 24:31]

          Adornment here means three things:

          ·Beautiful clothes

          ·Jewelry

          ·Cosmetics.

These three things form the adornment that Allaah The Almighty commanded women not to show before men except those who were excluded by Allaah The Almighty.

Allaah The Almighty Says (what means):{Except that which [necessarily] appears thereof} i.e., what cannot be concealed such as the outer clothes as well as what appears unintentionally. This verse proves that it is forbidden for women to show their adornment deliberately.

          Al-Qurtubi said,

"There are two types of adornment: natural and artificial. The natural adornment is embodied in the face, as it is the origin of adornment and beauty. Artificial adornment applies to the things through which a woman tries to beautify herself such as clothes and jewels. These two types of adornment should be concealed in implementation of the command of Allaah The Almighty (which means): {and not expose their adornment}."

3-Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {And women of post-menstrual age who have no desire for marriage -- there is no blame upon them for putting aside their outer garments [but] not displaying adornment.}[Quran 24:60]

This verse allows menopausal women who are no longer desired by men to put aside their outer garments and Khimaars (external covering garment). Nevertheless, the verse states that it is better for them to modestly refrain from doing so: {But to modestly refrain [from that] is better for them.}[Quran 24:60]

If this is the case with older women, then, what about the young women who can still tempt men? The Prophet saww said:“I am not leaving behind me a more harmful temptation to men than women.”[Al-Bukhaari and Muslim]

He also said: "Beware of this worldly life and of women. The first trial of the Children of Israel was through women.” [Muslim]

4-It was narrated on the authority of Abu Hurayrah ra that the Prophet saww said: “There are two types of the people of Hell whom I have not seen: […] and women who will be dressed but appear to be naked, inviting to evil; and they themselves will be inclined to it. Their heads will appear like the humps of camels inclined to one side. They will not enter Paradise and they will not smell its fragrance, which could be smelled from such-and-such a distance.”[Muslim]

Hadeeth*also implies a miracle of the Prophet saww because he foretold that women will do such things after his death, as he did not see them during his lifetime. Indeed, the prophecy came true and we see the women who are dressed in short or transparent clothes and headscarves but appear to be naked and even worse, because wearing such clothes may be more attractive than appearing naked.

Such evil and disobedient women wear this hairstyle and do it for other women. He saww says,
“Their heads will appear like the humps of*‎camels inclined to one side‎”

They make their heads look larger by wearing a headband as it is common among women today who gather their hair over their heads and foreheads.

                The Woman Is*‘Awrah

Ibn Mas’ood reported that the Messenger of Allaah said: “The woman is ‘awrah.”

This is a clear-cut proof that every part of a woman is ‘awrah (i.e. must be covered) in front of male strangers, whether that includes her face, or any otter part of her body. In fact, her face and hands have the most right to be covered since they are the areas that are sought after by men and the places of enticement from women.

Imaam Ahmad Ibn Hanbal understood well the aforementioned hadeeth of Ibn Mas’ood, as he said:

“A woman’s fingernail is ‘awrah (i.e. it must be covered). So when she goes out from her home, she must not reveal any part of herself, not even her khuff (sock), for the chuff describes the foot. What is preferred, in my opinion, is that she put a button on her sleeve where her hand is so that nothing could be exposed from her.”

Many scholars and Imaams throughout the history of time have come up with the same understanding of the hadeeth of Ibn Mas’ood and other similar texts as that of Imaam Ahmad Ibn Hanbal – that the entire body of a woman is ‘awrah without the exception of the face and hands…

As for the logical proof, then from the things which there is no doubt according to sane and unbiased people is that the fitnah involved in a woman unveiling her face and hands is greater than that of her exposing her feet, foe which the Prophet (saw) ordered the women to lengthen the hems of their dresses by a forearm’s length so that their feet would not be exposed.”

                  Importance Of Hijab (veil)

                  HIJAB (VEIL)*

                  AN ACT OF OBEDIENCE

The hijab is an act of obedience to Allah and to his prophet (pbuh), Allah says in the Qur'an:*`It is not for a believer, man or woman, when Allah and His messenger have decreed a matter that they should have an option in their decision. And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger, has indeed strayed in a plain error.' (S33:36).
Allah also said:*'And tell the believing women to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things) and protect their private parts (from illegal sexual acts, etc) and not to show off their adornment except what must (ordinarily) appear thereof, that they should draw their veils over their Juyubihinna.'(S24:31).
Juyubihinna: The respected scholars from As-Salaf As-Saleh (righteous predecessors) differed whether the veil cover of the body must include the hands and face or not. Today, respected scholars say that the hands and face must be covered. Other respected scholars say it is preferable for women to cover their whole bodies.*

                  THE HIJAB IS IFFAH (MODESTY)

modesty. Allah says:*'O Prophet! Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks (veils) over their bodies (when outdoors). That is most convenient that they should be known and not molested.' (S33:59).*In the above Ayaah there is an evidence that the recognition of the apparent beauty of the woman is harmful to her. When the cause of attraction ends, the restriction is removed. This is illustrated in the case of elderly women who may have lost every aspect of attraction. Allah (swt) made it permissible for them to lay aside their outer garments and expose their faces and hands reminding, however, that is still better for them to keep their modesty.*

                  THE HIJAB IS TAHARA (PURITY)

Allah (swt) had shown us the hikma (wisdom) behind the legislation of the hijab: `And when you ask them (the Prophet's wives) for anything you want, ask them from behind a screen, that is purer for your hearts and their hearts.' (S33:53).
The hijab makes for greater purity for the hearts of believing men and women because it screens against the desire of the heart. Without the hijab, the heart may or may not desire. That is why the heart is more pure when the sight is blocked (by hijab) and thus the prevention of fitna (evil actions is very much manifested. The hijab cuts off the ill thoughts and the greed of the sick hearts:
`Be not soft in speech, lest he in whose heart is a disease (of hypocrisy or evil desire for adultery, etc) should be moved with desire, but speak in an honourable manner.' (S33:32)*

                  THE HIJAB IS A SHIELD

The prophet (pbuh) said:*"Allah, Most High, is Heaven, is Ha'yeii (Bashful), Sit'teer (Shielder). He loves Haya' (Bashfulness) and Sitr (Shielding; Covering)." The Prophet (pbuh) also said:*"Any woman who takes off her clothes in other than her husband's house (to show off for unlawful purposes), has broken Allah's shield upon her.

                  THE HIJAB IS TAQWAH (RIGHTEOUSNESS)

Allah (swt) says in the Qur'an: `O children of Adam! We have bestowed raiment upon you to cover yourselves (screen your private parts, etc) and as an adornment. But the raiment of righteousness, that is better.'(S7:26).*The widespread forms of dresses in the world today are mostly for show off and hardly taken as a cover and shield of the woman's body. To the believing women, however the purpose is to safeguard their bodies and cover their private parts as a manifestation of the order of Allah. It is an act of Taqwah (righteousness).*

THE HIJAB IS EEMMAN (BELIER OR FAITH)*

Allah (swt) did not address His words about the hijab except to the believing women, Al-Mo'minat. In many cases in the Qur'an Allah refers to the "the believing women". Aisha (RA), the wife of the prophet (pbuh), addressed some women from the tribe of Banu Tameem who came to visit her and had light clothes on them, they were improperly dressed: "If indeed you are believing women, then truly this is not the dress of the believing women, and if you are not believing women, then enjoy it."*

                  THE HIJAB IS HAYA' (BASHFULNESS)

There are two authentic hadith which state: "Each religion has a morality and the morality of Islam is haya'" AND "Bashfulness is from belief, and belief is in Al-Jannah (paradise)". The hijab fits the natural bashfulness which is a part of the nature of women.*

                  THE HIJAB IS GHEEERAH

The hijab fits the natural feeling of Gheerah, which is intrinsic in the straight man who does not like people to look at his wife or daughters. Gheerah is a driving emotion that drives the straight man to safeguard women who are related to him from strangers. The straight MUSLIM man has Gheerah for ALL MUSLIM women In response to lust and desire, men look (with desire) at other women while they do not mind that other men do the same to their wives or daughters. The mixing of sexes and absence of hijab destroys the Gheera in men. Islam considers Gheerah an integral part of faith. The dignity of the wife or daughter or any other Muslim woman must be highly respected and defended.

                          Etiquettes of speech in islam:*

Abu Hurayrah ra , may Allaah be pleased with him, reported: “I heard the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, saying:

“A person utters a word thoughtlessly (i.e., without thinking about whether it is good or evil) and as a result, will plummet into the fire of Hell deeper than the distance between the east and the west.”[Al-Bukhaari & Muslim]

Abu Hurayrah ra, may Allaah be pleased with him, reported that the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said:
“A man may utter a word pleasing to Allaah without considering it of any significance, but for which Allaah elevates his ranks (in Paradise); another one may speak a word displeasing to Allaah without considering it of any importance, but for which he would be plummeted into Hell.”
                          [Al-Bukhaari]

Abu ‘Abdur-Rahmaan Bilaal bin Al-Haarith Al-Muzani, may Allaah be pleased with him, reported that the Messenger of Allaah sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said:

"A man may speak a good word without knowing its worth, for which Allaah records for him His good pleasure until the Day he will meet Him; another man may utter an evil word without realising its importance, for which Allaah records for him His displeasure until the Day he will meet Him.”[Maalik & At-Tirmithi]

When the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam was talking to Mu’aath, may Allaah be pleased with him, he told him:
"The root (i.e. foundation) of this matter is Islaam, its pillar (mainstay) is the prayer and its apex is Jihaad (fighting in the cause of Allaah).”
Then he sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam asked:
“Shall I tell you of that which holds together all these things?”
Mu’aath, may Allaah be pleased with him, said:
                          “Yes, O Messenger of Allaah!”

So he sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam held his tongue between his fingers, and said:
“Restrain this.”*Mu’aath, may Allaah be pleased with him, asked: “O Messenger of Allaah! Will we really be held to account for what we say?”*

The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam exclaimed:*“May your mother lose you! Most people will be thrown on their faces into the Hellfire on account of their tongues.”
                          [Ahmad & At-Tirmithi]

Ibn Mas’ood, may Allaah be pleased with him:*“That which requires imprisonment the most is one’s tongue.”

Adiyy bin Haatim, may Allaah be pleased with him, reported the Messenger of Allaah sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam as saying:

"Allaah will surely speak to every one of you without an interpreter. He (i.e., the one being spoken to) will look to his right and see nothing but (deeds) which he had done, and will look to his left and see nothing but (deeds) which he had done. Then he will look in front of him and will find nothing except the Hellfire facing him. So protect (yourselves) from the Fire, even if by giving in charity half a date, and if you cannot find that, then with a kind word.”
                          [Al-Bukhaari & Muslim]
